CONVERTING HILUX COIL REAR END TO AIR SHOCKS
I HAVE AN 85 MODEL HILUX THAT HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO COIL SPRING FRONT AND REAR. I WANT TO RUN AIR SHOCKS AT THE REAR AND GET MORE ARTICULATION. HAS ANYONE DONE THIS? ANY INFO OR IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BEFORE I MAKE THE DECISION TO GO AHEAD

Air shocks are generally used due to their light weight and easy packaging (ie no need for a seperate shock etc)

before changing thr setup you have, you need to have a look and see why you have limited flex already, is it because your current shocks are too short? how are they set up, is there any binding in your current control arms?
if there is no bindingin the setup yoiu have, you may be able to change the shock setup, and achieve the few extra inches your after,

Is that more a function of coil rates etc and better damping.locktup4x4 wrote:I actually lost a little bit of droop when I took out my coils and installed the coilovers. But I have a lot less body roll now with the coilovers on.

I imagine that your link geometory etc did not change.

Perhaps it is doable in NSW ... we have to play by a far more stringent rule book in Vic ... I have seen the reports on engineered 37's, lux diffs etc on a LWB Zuk in NSW.joeblow wrote:is it road registered?. you will find that running air shocks and no springs is illegal.

The way my shocks were inverted mainly and the coil spring were captured at the frame, but the capture had 8" of slip before it stopped. So the rear axle looked like it fell out when it dropped because it was so far down. But like I stated earlier there was allot of body roll with that coil spring setup. The geometry stayed the same.love_mud wrote:Is that more a function of coil rates etc and better damping.locktup4x4 wrote:I actually lost a little bit of droop when I took out my coils and installed the coilovers. my lux has been sitting in the back yard of my uncles for 5 years, i only got it a month ago and started cleaning it up. it was converted to coils about 8 years ago from some 4x4 shop in melbourne that i cant tack down. no markings of any sort on the work they have done. the ute is a metallic purple which is peeling everywhere lol. its going to take a while for it to be back on the road, unless i find something else better first

not legal in qld we wanted to run them on the 7 replica and engineer said no, why I don't know. as long as nothing binds i can's see the difference to a broken spring or worse a broken leaf.joeblow wrote:is it road registered?. you will find that running air shocks and no springs is illegal.
how they approve trucks with airbags only I am unsure of - different codes different requirements.
