Looking for info on replacing a mig welder torch

I might have the opportunity on picking up a SIP 150 Migmate pretty cheap. Problem is the torch is apparently buggered. Are welding torches easy to replace? Someone also suggested it might be worth converting it to a Euro torch. Anyone have any opinions on whether that worth doing or not? Can anyone suggest a place in Melbourne to get a new torch fitted (Moorabbin area)?

MIGs have a handle with a switch, liner and threaded socket for a welding tip.

The liner, switch and tip are easily replaced.

Unless the whole thing has fallen into a meat grinder, you will probably find it's 1 or 2 of those components need replacing and it's like new again.

Go to your local BOC Gas and Gear centre with the welder and they should be able to help.

You could try repco too as they sell these welders and I had to get a torch replaced under warranty.

It would want to be cheap.

A decent mig lead and handle are about $150 for the 4m.

Last SIP 150 I saw for sale was $250- so $400 working.

You can buy a good 200amp one second hand for that.

If you looking at this one I wouldn't waste your money, no where near enough power to work on cars etc. Only good little handy man jobs.

Anyone tried one of those ebay inverter migs? Not bad price for what you get, if they're good.

Take it to a decent welder repair shop.
It more than likely wont need a complete torch replacement.
As said they dont have many parts in them that fark up.
If it does need a torch you will be looking at a couple of hunji.
I would use it as a good excuse to upgrade the whole welder instead.

I converted my CIG mig to the euro connector. The bulkhead fitting comes with everything you need and costs about $130.
You then have to add a torch and line to that, even a cheapie will be pushing $150, so probably not worth converting a cheap machine.

So how standard are all these parts?

For example if I buy a generic chinese mig from somewhere, what are my odds of finding replacement liners and tips later on?
Do they adhere to some sort of standard?

That appears to be a euro with a Benzel lead and hand piece. IMO the best set up to run. Spare parts are available everywhere and for a handman welder they will last your lifetime. I almost refuse to use a welder if it doesnt have a Benzel or Equivilant hand piece.

Ps; You need to give your wire a spray with some WD or similar if your storing it for long periods. Yours appears to be all rusty which doesnt help with welding and stuffs liners,feed rollers,feed motors and hand pieces real fast.

Do you have anyidea what is wrong with the torch?

common replacement of the whole lotis due to the inner core being exposed and can arc up exploding the inner cable which will really stuff it up, done that myself.

other things that can be replaced are
liner
gun shell
trigger
goose neck
gas disfuser
then you get into what is the amercian or euro type guns.

it's the nozzle and tips used, the amercain one will be dear and lot dearer than the euro type, as the euro type is all screw in, the amercain type is put in then turn it's not a screw in bar for the end nozzle bit the collar is a all in one collar/tip holder.

I havn't had to buy any euro type stuff, but the amercain type will cost you $32 for a tip and the nozzle is around $35 each.

I only bought them because the place I was working at couldn't just go and buy them they had to fuck about for 3 to 6 months while the upper boses decided to get their shit together, this also being a place where they do welding all the time, I've never worked at a place which basicly had 30 welders but all 30 welders were alll stuffed in 1 way or another and still couldn't be arsed to fix them up.

for you it would be cheaper just to pick up a new gun as some welding shops will exchange them for a new gun setup, so they get the sale but you get a brand new gun, which is a lot easier to deal with than an old clapped out gun.

just remove the gun lead from the machine as you have 2 types a bayonet and a plug in type the plug in type would be the more used type these days.

Yeah, there is a collar that you unscrew and the whole lot unplugs from the bulkhead. It has an o-ring for the gas interface.
