Engine no go no more !

Post by roadrunner »

Towing a trailer from Sydney to Melbourne on a nice warm day in the 4.2 turbo; bit of a bang, motor stops dead. Pull up for a looksee, oil and water pouring from head gasket :x

Fair chance of the head being warped / cracked but does anyone think I'll have any bottom end damage ?

The head I can change myself but if its anything more than that, it will mean a trip to the spanner men.

Any opinions from the board would be good

If it went with a bang.. just pray that you didnt lose your bottom end as well . Warped heads are not common in 4.2s as they are cast iron heads.

Good chance your precomps are busted and will need new ones along with injectors provided they they arent rooted

Warranty???

No warranty GQ , she's a 94 model and high on kilometers ( 260 000 ).

Thinking I might put on a new head and injectors and see if it runs. It turns over in short bursts, maybe some coolant in the combustion chambers causing problems.

Seen too many defenders laying down to ever bother with one :D :finger:

Please say that you have removed the glow plugs when you say it turns over in short bursts, otherwise you may have answered your question as to whether you may have bottom end damage!

 Yep, certainly have, although its a fair comment as I've seen a few people try to clear water from a diesel by cranking it

Didn't last long. ;)

A mate had the same thing with his TB42, but he had to get a new bottom end, the block was warped.

He had the head redone, and the usual corrosion fixed, $1000, then put back together, but then noticed the block was fubar too...

Good luck, time to look at Chev conversions!

6.2 diesel turbo would be pretty flash, unfortunately the little lady demands shiney things that cost a lot

Might sell her Vitara to finance the project  :D

there was a 6.2 in forsale section for $1600 that came with everything to rebuild it... it should still be there.

Thanks Bogged but I'll stick with the 4.2 turbo ( for some reason the missus is attached to her Vitara and doesn't want to sell it ! )

Am going to start pulling it apart today, so should soon see what damage has been done :?
