crazy idling on my vitara

hi all, recently noticed my vitara (1.6 efi SWb) has been idling high and loping, going up n down at idle!!!!

even worse after towing my new sierra body from maroochidore to brisbane, after stopin at a servo to fuel up i noticed the idle goin crazy for about 5mins then it when back to normal...

whats goin on with it?


any help is needed!!!

hey mate

this happened to me but i caused it

it is the timing, the way i fixed it by sliding the dissy across the adjustment bar were it enters/leaves the block.

mine was doing this after some hard driving once i had it on the road.

i put it down to either the fuel surging in the tank or computer still learning.

adjust your dizzy. if that doesn't work it might be the water pipes to your idle up control have corroded and blocked. if it does not get a good flow of hot water it will tell the idle up to do some strange shit.

x 2 - The IAC valve on my G13b caused this. Can be because the pipes are blocked with crap, an air lock or the valvle has shat itself.

Feel the valve if it is hot (where the water runs through) then the valve is buggered, if not pull the exit pipe and bleed any air out. Still no go, make sure the pipes are clear.

sorry but i must be slow. wats an IAC valve and where is it situated on a g16b. im guessin in one of the water pipes on the engine somewhere.

ooops I hope I didn't jump the gun in assuming the 1.6 has them aswell...

Mine is on the back of the intake manifold, its a valve thats plummed into you intake manifold. There should be two collant hoses running to it, one into it and one out to the throttle body. Pull the throttle body side off and male sure colant is flowing through.

IAC stands for Idle Air Control, basically it is the valve that controls the amount of air that enters the motor at idle, controlling your idle RPM.

Another possibility assuming its injected it that the throttle position sensor isn't closing its idle contact. This keeps the ecu in closed loop mode and it therefore hunts on the oxygen sensor - rich then lean and so on causing cyclic idle fluctuation.

When the contacts work the ECU switches into open loop mode and produces a smooth idle.

Note - this is an observation from Japaneease ECU's of that vintage - not a specific Suzuki thing. Some of the Denso TPS's are notorious for it....

Its something to investigate if the other things fail.

you will find 2 water pipes going into tha IAC valve just bellow the throttle body on a g16b.

well i just got round to the idling on my vitara and it all seems fixed!!!

i adjusted the dizzy just a lil bit and it fixed the crazy idling i was having recently everyday!!!!

but just one thing - after i adjusted the dizzy the idle droped to about 900 - 950rpm (by eyesight) and thats where it stayed when i took it for a test drive just now (when i came to complete stops at lights, intersections ect) came home turned it off for about 10 seconds then i turned it back on to double check and it immedialty idled right up to 2000rpm then droped slowly - took about 10 seconds to drop to 950rpm.

is this normal?

note: i didnt have my foot on the throttle lol

just when i thought all was well........WRONG!!!!

still havin the idling problem>>>>> idles just over 2000rpm and does so for at least 20mins until it warms up, then randomly it will idle normal (950rpm) but often surges back up to 1500rpm to 2000rpm dropping back to 1500rpm then back to 2000rpm when im at idle n does so until it stops i guess last about 15mins roughly :bad-words: :? :bad-words:


anyone had this before??

I gave up on my carby, and took it into a carby shop to get them to set it up for me. I'd been buggering around with idle and mixture for so long and couldn't get it to work so I bit the bullet and paid them to do it. Probably doesn't help your situation but there's a reason mechanics specialise in carbys :oops: :oops: :bad-words:

I've had similar problems with Landrover V8's and some Toyotas too. It turned out there was a lot of crap in the IAC. The Rovers especially since they breath hard and spray oil from the rocker breather straight into the IAC. This mixes with dirt in the airflow and tends to choke everything up. A can of Carb Clean and a rag will sort this out. You may have to remove the IAC completely from the manifold to clean it properly. Clean as much of the intake as you can too while you are there.

Also check that all the hoses are hot once the engine is up to temp, if there are any cold hoses you have a blockage. Did you bleed the cooling system with the heater on hot? It may just have an air bubble that won't bleed out. Check thermostat too.

hey mate

hope it gets better

when i adjusted the dissy i found straight after it would go to around 1500-2000 and then drop to normal around 600-900, i think it is just because the engine was cold. check the time if you can (with a timing gun) this well also be a cause for high-low-high rpm, make sure it is perfect.

once you have tightened the dissy screws check the timing again because you may not think that you have moved it but you may have.
