HELP Separating Hilux CV joints
I have bought a new Outer CV, but I need to get my old inner axle
out of the hilux CV joint to fit it to the NEW outer I just bought.
How the hell do you get these damn Toyota Hilux
Solid front axle CV's apart?? They are resilient little
buggers!!
It says in the workshop manual to just put in a vice
and smash it with a brass drift on the inner of the cage?
but that is gonna wreck the cage cause I can't find a brass drift
to save me. NO ONE has got one in Sydney!!
so I have been using other less harsh implements...
but the damn inner axle will not come out of the CV at all.
HELP...otherwise I can't go wheeling this weekend.
I got the hub rebuild kit and all ready to go!!!
There must be an easy way to do this??

The Lux is back. New and Improved v2.0!
find something sold with a gap in it just big enough to get the axle through. (a vice or similar. then holding onto the axle slide the axle through the hole so it stops on the CV. eventually the cv will pop off the axle, you have to hit it bloody hard though to compress the cir clip inside..

the next problem you'll face will be getting the circlip on with the new CV and inner axel.. first time i rebuilt my front end this is what took the most time for me..

About the brass drift (which it says to use in the manual)
I dunno, I have never been able to find a brass drift to see what it is?
Seem to be one of those "old skool" tools that everyone forgot about.
Does anyone even use brass drifts anymore?? OR just soft faced
hammers? What do you use to beat on stuff, without marring or breaking
it?? What do u use to soften the blows?

I recently used a block of aluminium instead of a brass drift as I also found it difficult to buy one.. the aluminium was soft enough not to damaged the studs i was banging on (to get cone washers out) and can be got pretty easy out of the scrap bin at most steel joints..

you can do away with the inner circlip if you want.
on the diff end of the axle, you will see where the wear mark of the diff on the axle, get a piece of plate or something, line it up with the mark and do a quick small weld to fill a couple of the splines on the axle using the plate as a guide to not fill too much spline.
When you're happy with the spot of weld, it should be easy to snap of the piece of plate and I used a hand file to file the spot of weld smooth to the top of the edges of the spline. This will stop the axle running to far into the diff.
Did this to my lux a few years ago and never had a problem.

I have a bit of pipe about 3" diamter and just longer than the long side inner axle. stand the pipe on its end on a wood block, and drop the axle down into the pipe. 9/10 times the weight of the axle dropping in the pipe and coming to a sudden stop is enough to drop it out, and because the force is distributed (unlike belting it in one spot with a drift), most of the time the inner C clip does not break.

the tube crossmember just above the rear wheels on the hilux works quite well, just make sure there is nothing on the other side that the axle could smash into as it flies out.
