So when it comes to Hilux's I don't know alot about what there like.
Suspension wise and accessories I'm ok, but what are they like after 100,000k's with weekend off roading ?
For the people that have them what are things you would do or not do again.
Its only going to be a Medium off roader for the wife to get out with me more often.
Looking at 2" lift, bigger tyres, Winch, Winch bar and scrub rails, rear bar and might go sports bar and lid.
Do they handle up to this sort of stuff ok ? Will do more camping style of stuff than hard core 4x4ing.
Looking between a SR and a SR5. What would you buy again ?
Any help would be appreciated.

One of the blokes in our hunting crew has one. I drove it last week in the Vic High Country.
Im not really rapt in them, in fact I wouldnt get one myself.
We did some pretty hard 4wding, and every other vehicle did it with out trouble, but that truck scraiped (sp?) and hit just about everything on the ground. The bash plate ended up getting wiped out.
I drove it into a drop - off into a river . No problem. Coming out the other side I had a ledge to go up and then a very steep pinch. I thought I would test the power of it ( it wasnt my truck ) so instead of putting it in 4x4 low 1, I put it in 4x4 high 1. It climbed out without a problem but it got bashed from underneath.( in my 4x4 I would of been in low 1 )
I dont like IFS, and this truck got hooked up ( not badly ) on deep ruts. Other trucks got through fine.
The ride along the bush tracks was incredable --- hardly felt a bump
Overall, the main problem I had with it was the IFS --- too much stuff to hit and a problem with getting hooked up .
I have an 07 and its setup like what you kinda have in mind.
Its a great truck and I absolutely love it. I have embarrased quite a few people with their bigger fourby's with lockers going up some steep and rocky terrain, without lockers. Just slow and steady and picking the right line.
with the new hilux's, you have to understand what their limitations are and drive accordingly and with common sense so not to damage your vehicle.
that said, I would not take a stock Hilux anywhere off a gravel road. like mentioned, in standard form they are too low and scrape.
Ive lifted mine a good 3 inches, have fitted a TJM under body front and centre bashplates....this I reccomend as a must for any new hilux owner. They are almost bulletproof. Have had the hilux land hard on rocks on this bashplate and barely a scratch.
am running 285/75x16 muddies, and yeah, the gearing is slightly out, and little bit of power loss, but you learn to live with it, and for what I do, I love it.

I'm with MMaaxx here. I have one and with a good lift and protection plates they are great. Your not going to climb rock walls but with a bit of thought and careful wheel placement they will go nearly anywhere you want. Not to mention a pretty comfy ride for a ute and great economy on the road.
