It's coming, my new pootrol.
It comes with remote central locking, but I live in dodgyville - or more precisely, not far from dodgyville, so I'm thinking of putting in a noisemaker. It won't stop anything, but at least that way I can say I did all I could...
I was thinking of the benefits of walking out to my pre-warmed or pre-cooled (seasonally) car, and thus was considering Remote Start as a feature.
Anyone got one? What brand? Hard to put in? Exxy? A job for the mechanic? For a specialist auto eleccy? For someone on close terms with a deity? Can you refer me somewhere?

Anyone know a good auto-elec or mech who'd install it for me? I asked one who said it would take 6 HOURS to install!! You've got to be f^$%ing joking me!! And at $88 an hour... I only want him to install it, not build the damn thing from scratch with a soldering iron and a pile of components.

The only drama i can see would be making sure that the vehicleis still locked when you remote start it. ie. you will need to have seperate circuits for immobilise/start, unlock, unlock/imobilise(if ya wanna do the old fashioned way, with a key). That would be 3 seperate funtcions (buttons) on the remote. And of course you will need to make sure your handbrake is in tip top condition cos you hopefully wont be leaving it in gear to often.
Too much of a root around for me but its a good idea in theory, very 007.

No no, the alarm is already set up for it. It has Remote Start as a feature. IT has a range of about 5kms too, or so it says, but I'm not sure I'd beleive that till I saw it - when I'm 5kms away and the alarm goes off, my keyring beeps at me.
But on a stinking hot day, looking out the window knowing I left it with the aircon going... pressing a couple of buttons and seeing it kick over... then wandering out and slipping into it already-cool... hmm nice.
For the naysayers, it has a neutral sensor to stop it turning over if it's in gear. And it starts with the doors locked, and when it's remote started, if you try to open the doors or you bang the car etc without unlocking it deliberately with the remote, the engine cuts off immediately. It also has a timer in case you start her up then forget you did.
But who to fit it - in less than 6 hours....

But I really just want it as a toy. The alarm itself serves a purpose, but if I'm going to spend money on a thing that makes noise and not much else, I want it to do something cool too.
I spoke to an alarm guy trying to sell me his car alarm, and all it did was make noise and immobilise. That's a roll of black wire, a $20 remote off ebay, and siren, a gell cell 12v battery and half a dozen relays. I could build his damn alarm for about $50 in parts, and he's trying to sell it for $500? WTF?
It needs to do something special to be worth money to me. 2 way paging remote that tells me when the alarm goes off and with a serious range, monitoring/learning remote-start feature that watches how long it took you the last 10 times to start your car, then cranks it for about that long. THOSE are features I can use. Noise is worth nothing.

Technically... it would be the same as all my previous vehichle then. I've already had it a week now - it's overdue.
I'll put in a noisemaker if I have to, but I wanna remote start!! Didn't realise it would be so damn hard to do. JBHifi or something similar (what's the black and yellow one?) I was in the other day had an alarm with remote start on their wall of shame (where the stereos are) - they install too don't they?

dont worry about anyone else mate, putting remote start in is a piece of piss, i got a carvox alarm off ebay.. came with the remote start module, the module has, Start, IGN 1, IGN 2, ACC, you tap into these iginition wires near the barrel, and then it usually has a park brake wire that only lets it start when the park brake is on, so that goes to the hand brake switch, then you will have a signal wire that goes to tacho or oil pres so it know when to stop cranking the motor so it knows its started, then most alarms will have a glow plug wire to pickup the signal when the car has glowed and is ready to start, i reckon i could get one working in about 2 hours.Tom0 wrote:Technically... it would be the same as all my previous vehichle then. I have a factory immobiliser with a chip in the key.
If it was that easy to start bypassing the immobi, wouldn't the immobiliser just be a decoration? (Maybe it is!)

Interesting work-around... I'll have to look into that.
The alarm itself would have an immobiliser function in its place, so that's fine.

Whitemav was right.
Apparenly the chip in the key is like an RF proximity tag - if you stick the head of your key to your steering column (glue/tape/whatever) then the car will start with a suitable key even without another chip. It just has to be nearby - not on the key doing the starting.
So If I pull the head off my patrol key and stick it somewhere inside the steering column, then immobilise the car by other means (ie with the alarm's immobiliser circuits) it will still be immobilised but the remote start circuit should work!
Maybe I can do this myself...

- listen to what's going on around the car (alarm has a microphone)
- Speak to people near/in the car (2 way speakerphone - alarm has speaker as well a mic)
- remotely unlock the doors from wherever you are (eg 500kms away)
- remotely start the car
- remotely pop the boot if you have one
I work for a mobile network, so it suits me. =)

cant be done on a GU (or i would already have one)
the problem with newer cars is their factory immobiliser systems wont allow the car to be started unless the key is near the barrel.
there is a way around it by removing the ring around the barrel and taping the spare key to it and then using the alarm. but there is no point as you are taking away an extra imobiliser

i used to install car alarms as part of my job a couple years ago and i looked into doing it with the GU, but worked out its not worth doing.
just get a good blackwire alarm and add a pager to it if you want to know whats going on with the alarm

Actually, it is doable. You can either tapes glue the chipl in thesteering column,then immobilize the car elsewhere, oryou can spend $25 on a bypass module called a DEI 556U. That's the universal transponder bypass module which lets you leave the immob; in place and still make it work. Pirate guys knew all about it - it's really easy to do.
