Hey guys, just bought nissan pathfinder 1990 model...are they any good offroad? If yes, any modifications you recommed doing to it?
Thanks
Thanks
Had a 86 2 door, not bad off-road but you need to put bigger tyres on them. 31" are good size for them. Is very easy to body lift them and wind up the front torsion bars.
They do have a lsd as standard. But is not all that effective.
Not bad all-round tourer but they dont like deep ruts or bog holes.

Aaah. That pic brings back such memories... of the interior of my 88 GQ, and of my old troopy which filled up in a similar manner one cold afternoon when it got stuck on a 45% left hand tilt, one side in a bog hole, one side dry (I was trying to go around and one side slipped in- it was 3 feet deep)
For $800 you can't go far wrong. If it gets stuck, just leave it there. =)

They are quite capable if you do a little bit to them.
Both of these Pathies had a 2.4ltr 4cyl POS. Both now have a Commodore V6 in them. Mine, the silver and black, has a 3 inch body lift and a 4 or 5 inch suspension lift with a live axle (MQ) up the front with 33's. The other one belongs to sw and has a 2 inch body lift, stockish ride hight and an air locker with 31's (I think).
The Pathfinder with the locker in it (sw's) was very impressive and got through some boggy ruts with no effort at all. Unlike mine with its open diffs.
So long story short, both will go where most other 4wds will go but the steering on the IFS is a major issue.

Small world. She certainly looks different now. lol. I modded the wheel carrier some more too. The interior is still the same except for the stacker and head unit.whitemav wrote:No sh1t mate, That black one on the 33"s is my old car?
Same as in my pic above.
If Im right it has got a cut down wheel carrier?
Nice work on it by the way.
Currently it is in the garage getting the next round of mods done to it. Divorced transfer case and fitting a getrag with all the manufacturing of crossmembers, cutting and welding that this mod requires. Time is a factor, not enough of it that is, so it has been slow going.
Just scored auto lockers for it too. So it will be locked front and rear when it finally gets back on the road. I hope to have coil overs done too.
Are you still in Wantirna? I'll bring it around when it is done.
Cheers,
Steve.
GU3 Patrol Wagon.
The rear diff is the same as a Patrol so don't worry about strength there but the front isn't as good. The have a weak steering box. (relatively speaking). The basic chassis drive train etc is the same as a Navara etc for coils spring in the rear.
A mate has one that goes very very well but he is constantly repairing the front steering/suspension. With the 3.0 V6 the go very well. I have one of these as well but it was used mainly on road as a work wagon, but I'm thinking of putting the drive train and suspension from my GQ under it as something different. (including the turboed V8)

93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
Not in Wantirna anymore, but still in the eastern burbs.Vsicks Pathy wrote:Small world. She certainly looks different now. lol. I modded the wheel carrier some more too. When its all done will have to go for a wheel, would love to see what it can do.
Will be great with the light weight, lockers and gears.
Ill have to watch out, my Mav might struggle to keep up
Nice mods, I had one just the same beofre I got my first Patrol, Was a 96 2.7D non turbo, put 31's on it which affected the gearing dramatically. Put heavy duty torsion bars and wound the front up - lifted coils in back...prob was there was no movement towards upper bump stop. I was taking it places I shouldn't and every six months when i went for a warrant of fitness it cost me $2-400 to get the ifs front repaired. That was the only prob - too many ball joints and suspension components so good move on putting a live axle in!!

Hey mate, the weakest part in the suspension is the idler arm (same as most IFS vehicles) In my terrano I made a brace to stop it bending the shaft.. Have pics if you need them .... Also the draglink itself wears out and get what is call rollover where instead of moving sideways it basically rolls or pivots on the tierods and idler etc and makes the steering very vague and tram track alot ...
Its NOT A FORD Its a NISSAN ....
