HJ47 5 speed conversion - Trans or rear diff Handbrake?

Just after some opinions on whether do convert the 5 speed transfer to handbrake or to setup the rear diff?

I have all required parts to go either way.

All we ever hear is people whinging about Toyota handbrakes. If one drum brake on the drive shaft is no good, I can only see two on the rear wheels being a bit better?

ive just fitted a 5 speed into a fj45 and was going to fit the transfer handbrake onto it but realised that theres is no way it will fit without chopping out the tube chassi crossmember

so im fitting a 60 diff under the back so i get handbrake and wider track at the same time

Even though i have rebuilt my transmission drum brake and it works a treat (even painted it shiny silver - shows up oil better) I would go the rear drum brake set-up.

i am doing a 5speed and 60 series axle conversion into my 40 series soon and will go with the rear drum handbrake set up but try and use the original under dash handle if I can as I dont have a floor mounted handbrake lever (or the floor space) mainly because I dont know how to mount the tranny drum onto the rear of the 60 series split T-case...

Yeah, I guess i'd rather be playing with backing plates, a cables and a little bit of welding rather that splitting both transfer and swapping bits over. Had a bad experience years ago watching my own car roll down a hill into my mates ute after I blew a rear diff AND a CV at the same time. No handbrake at all obviously when you loose drive to both diffs.

Yeah, pre 1980 tranny handbrakes won't fit the split 5 speed transfer anyway unfortunately.

just done put the 60 series backin plates one me 47series ute a month ago recon its about 10 times better. think i had to use a early model 75 series hand brake cable which was only just long enough didnt have to do any weldin thou thankfully. just used a bit of thread rod and a spring seems to work good . defently alot easier then worring about the tranni brake which are prone to failure at the best of times

Didn't have to weld tabs onto the rear housing to hold the cable at all?

Yeah I've done this. 60 drums on the rear of the 40. 60 handbrake cable at the back joins up to the 40 cable from the front (under dash pull out)using a booty fabbed joiner to allow for adjustment. I did weld a tab on the housing to secure the cable in the correct position. Works well.

were they late 40 housings or early ones.
as the early 40 series housings and the 60 series bolt pattern is different for the backing plates.

Early housing. I just re-drilled the 60 backing plate to suit. I think from memory 2 or 4 holes lined up and I had to drill out the rest.
