They are great in sand, you need to lower your tyre pressure.

Every tire out there has + and - ... All brands and models have fans... every tire out there you will get conflicting stories.

Off topic, has anyone tried the new BFG muds yet?
Our local tyre dealer here (one of only two in town) said that he cant get them because BGF are only going to sell them from 4x4 outlets that sell tyres??? And yet he sells all the other BFG's well except Krawlers cos no one out here would have a use for them anyway.

If you run the wrong tyre pressure the MTZs will be crap in sand, I found that they worked heaps better than my old MTs only after if I lowered them an extra 3-4psi.

If you run the wrong tyre pressure the MTZs will be crap in sand, I found that they worked heaps better than my old MTs only after if I lowered them an extra 3-4psi.

if you run the wrong pressure every tyre will be crap in sand.If you run the right pressure every tyre will work in sand ,its not rocket science

Some tyre are good in some kinds of mud but not others; there's a big difference between the stuff you get in the deep dark valleys around buller/stirling, and the mud you find in the blue mountains - chalk and cheese. When a lot of people say a tire is great in mud - which mud are they talking about? Are they all co-incidentally from the same area? If so, then you still need a relevant opinion which suits where you're going to be using the tyre.

I bought some MTR muds years go after reading lots of posts saying how good they were... but after they clogged up with mud in 27 seconds and I asked again, I found out they're fine in sandy nsw mud, but suck big time in clay based vic high country mud.

Sand aint sand either - you want soft fine dry sand with no base, like desert dunes? Or soft on top but moist underneath like a beach dune, or course beach sand, or mountain sand eroded from sandstone, or gibba sand with rocks in it, or do you mean that quicksand-like soft stuff mixed bull dust ... etc.

Asking again, especially when you ask very specific questions, is a good thing.

yes. but you NEVER EVER EVER get everyone agreeing on a tire being good/bad.. Theres always some that say they suck, some say they are great - what use is that? Thats more my point.

Also with tires theres 2908230948230984 variables to consider.
What works in the High country maynot work in Qld conditions.. lots love claws in Qld, lots love pedes in Melb, and lots in qld hate pedes, and lots in melb hate claws. thats only 1 variable. then cars, mods, drivers etc.

i got a month ago a new set on the new 06 gu and got 5 000 km on them already following a team pisswreck shooting trip to dubbo etc /work had them climbing rocks up rainbow beach and a heap of blacktop work already and much more to come

got the coopers AT that came of it stat having learnt from the last set and one trip to cruiser half farking them.

went slightly smaller tyre as to avoid altering the speedo with the newer trucks speedo being under real speed stock for whatever reason as opposed to 04 which was the opposite with the 33's correcting speedo.

Lugs on new ones nearly seem deeper than previous ones when new again for whatever reason. Little bit of rubber hum but as discussed before the reall noise starts anywhere from 40 000 - 60 000 depending on what kms and work they do....

my advice would be as with most muddies regular balanceing and alignments to avoid severe rubber noise later in the tyre life. i have learnt my lesson and dont run to highapressure in them...


i dont think anyone should get to excited over rubber thasts not in a small packet with lube but these go ok

Offroad I'm impressed with mine. They are better onroad now too, not great, but OK. Still a bit vague, but have worn in.

I run 17PSI in my fully laden 100 w/ 285/75/16's

Bulge everywhere. No sidewalls yet, and that includes Sundown (lots of nasty shale).
I used to do sidewalls all the time.

Have tried the cooper STTs and now the MTZs on the GU

The STTs were good, lasted about 75,000 which I was happy with (2x desert trips & the rest sand (fraser/north shore) and road). I agree with the earlier comments that regular wheel allignments and balance are important if you are driving on road more than off road (most of us - admit it, unless it is a buggy)

The MTZ are great, but for a GU wagon with 2-3inch lift I would stick with the 285s next time, the 315s are that bit too big so they scrub on tight corners making it annoying when doing u-turns, etc

I reckon the STTs and MTZs were pretty similar on the sand, I didn't notice any significant differene (unlike Claws

Have done about 20k so far and am VERY happy with the MTZs, very quiet on road too.

I've got photos of 305/70s on 16 X 8 black steel rims on mine if your interested? Same rolling diameter as the 285/75s but about an inch fatter.

I bought the 305/70/16s in September/October 2007 last year, and they were $330 per corner.

Mate with the hummer put 285/75s on about a month ago and I think he paid about $280 per corner for them. I know he got them off "FlexyTJ" on this forum at a tyre mob in Sth Melb.

We were both in Walhalla on the weekend. I asked him how he went with the MTZs and he said wasn't that happy compared to the STTs he had previously and also BFG MTs, mind you he didn't drop his tyre pressures.

In the high country, I tend to drop mine (305/70/16) to about 20 - 22lbs, and I have been happy with them at that pressure in the high country. My first trip on them was 4,000kms from Melbourne up to Flinders Ranges and around there for a week. Then up the Strezlecki to Cameron's Corner and down the Silver City Hwy. They held up well on the gibber plains and gravel roads and whilst there were a couple of small chips and scratches out of the tread blocks I was happy with their performance on the trip.

Am I happy with them? Yes, they are a good all round tyre suitale for most conditions.

They have served me well on the black top, in the high country, and touring through the desert.

used the MTZ's last weekend at the EXTREME WINCH CHALLENGE @ rocky ,
the conditions varied from sand,rock, wet red clay, dry dusty dirt, mud & even deep water with wet rock exits. the tyres performed extremly well, esp through the fast stages, I will definately be using these again!!!! & after seeing how well they performed theres a few other comp trucks going to convert.. pressures I ran for the whole weekend were 16psi front & 14psi rear.. hope this is of some help PIGLET

I brought these tyres as road and some 4wd trips away like menia sometimes.

The mtz are crap/rubbish in wet slippery hills.mud
there are great for the rest.And im happy with that.

I have other tyres for comps that wont let me down.
