air lockers or auto
hey guys another good question from a novice , which locker would you put in the front , ive been talking to a few of the local boys that do abit of 4x4ing an which lockers to use an what not , an ive been told that auto lockers in the front are dangerous because they can lock in when you dont want them to, ie driving you into banks on slippery rutted hills and situations like that.
and as fore the rear that you can get away with a auto locker but it can make it more challengin when on open dirt roads sending you sideways.
as being fairl new to offroading i would have no idea what to choose there for i will ask you?

Definitely go air locker on front and if you have enough $$$ air on the rear as well so you can control it also.
Auto lockers on the front are not a good idea as they can lockup and make steering around corners on a slippery surface near impossible. I had nothing but trouble with mine in a 60series.
Rear auto lockers are fine, but if you have fitted an air locker to the front you are already half way there with air compressor fitted and you also gain the ability to control when it's on or off with air. Some auto lockers can also be annoying locking and unlocking in normal driving conditions, but this is rare.
As soon as I have enough $$$ it's front and rear air lockers for my new car.

Seeing as its an IFS lux go an auto up front they are not as harsh on the drivetrain, cheaper and make a huge difference off road. Save for a rear air locker down the track. I never once had my auto locker cause me the troubles you spoke of.

Like booflux said. Personally I've had no problem with my auto lockers in 15,000km. They are Lockright Powertrax Noslip's and cost a little more than the standard Lockrights, but operate a lot smoother.

If you have the money my preference would be to put a air locker in the front. With a auto locker you will notice when you have 4wd engaged you have a lot bigger turning circle then you would of if you didn't have the locker. I have Detroit's and would much rather a air locker in the front.
Something else that I don't think many people think of is that by having a auto locker you miss out on the fun of trying a track unlocked first.

Ben
when i got lockers the biggest problem i had was leaving the front in accidentally and when going fast the car keeps going in a straight line. very hard to turn in loose stuff at speed. thats the only problem i have with auto lockers. but...... drive without a locker to get skills then upgrade.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

If not go the cheap lockrite... 'Bang for your buck' they are awsome

That may work for a solid axle but with an IFS you will tend to break things due to the fact you WILL need momentum thanks to the lack of flex. IMO you will learn more with an auto in an IFS as you can pick a line rather than just flog the tits off it.bad_religion_au wrote:if your new to offroading, don't put a locker in
best way to learn how to actually drive a 4bie is keep it unlocked for a few years.
