Converting Leaf Spring Diffs To Coil
Converting Leaf Spring Diffs To Coil
Just toying with the idea of upgrading my gq leaf ute to a gq coil ute but
want to take my lockers with me . As there is a large difference between leaf and coil diffs, thinking about picking up a second pair of leaf diffs
and getting the coil suspension hardware welded on ready for the transfer
of lockers - this then would give me larger/stronger diffs with lockers
under my new coil ute . Now for the questions - Has anyone done this mod before? .Pro's and Cons?
I know everyones thinking why not just add lockers to a coil ute!! But I already have the lockers and with another ute can just transfer all the
fruit from the leaf ute to the coil ute then sell the leaf ute a standard ute and be left with a set of standard gq coil diffs to sell. After all that if it is posssible to do this conversion who woild be the best people to see to carry out the welding etc in QLD.
Anyones thoughts on this mod/change over would be apprecated.

yes - have a leaf sprung GQ ute.grimbo wrote:I don't understand what you are wanting to do.
Do you have a leaf sprung GQ ute?
Do you want to change the suspension from leaf to coil?
or
Do you have a leaf spring GQ ute and want to buy a coil GQ ute and just transfer your lockers over?
no - too much work & $$ to convert my own
yes-diffs not compatable for straight locker swap.
Modify second set of Gq leafy diffs to go into coil ute.(remove my lockers
& place into modified set and install in new ute)
In a nutshell buy Gq coil ute and add Gq leady diffs.

Your front air locker can be redrilled (2 holes) to fit a high pinion GQ Coil diff centre.
Rear sell it and buy a new locker. There will be little if any money loss..

There's a good one on here of this swap - Tims GQ ute build. (don't know how to link) Might just purchase coil ute swap the fruit over and sell GQ leafy - less hassles then.unclearther wrote:get a wagon coil chassis & put your gq ute cab on it. I know someone that did it & all they had to modify was the rear body mounts on the chassis. Sell your lockers & put that money towards new ones
Possibly pick one up comp ready bars ect already installed.

Same as the GQ Coil but 4 inch narrowor and has a low mount pinion and the steering setup is out the front of the diff.dave_str wrote:Sorry to hijack Animal.
Just wondering what is the front diff in the leaf sprung GQ's.
I am assuming the rear is a H260, same as the GU.
Thanks
Yes GQ and GU coil utes are H260. Some MQ's are as are some 4500 and 4800 petrol and 3000turbo d GU wagons.

buy a good coil ute and either cop the $$ for the new rear locker or look at putting the leaf diff in, they are a stronger unit, but they are a bigger diff so less clearence, the only bloke I know that converted a GU leaf to coil ended up getting rid of the H260 and going a GQ coil diff for clearence
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
or if you feel you need the massive H260...just drag it over everything!Tiny wrote:buy a good coil ute and either cop the $$ for the new rear locker or look at putting the leaf diff in, they are a stronger unit, but they are a bigger diff so less clearence, the only bloke I know that converted a GU leaf to coil ended up getting rid of the H260 and going a GQ coil diff for clearence
