How bad can they possibly be? (Aldi Winches)

I got one I havn't tried it, lol don't have a bullbar for the 4wd as yet.

it's a motozone brand which I'd say it's a aldi company name, anyway made in china, I got the 9500pound one, $500.

looks good, has the hand control + 2 remotes to control it.

has 28 meters of steel wire 8mm thick.

5 meters has to be kept on the roll, this last 5 meters is painted red to let you know.

has the 4way rollers.

2 cheapy gardening gloves but I have plently of riggers gloves.

tested to AS1418.2

can't think of much else other than it's all black including the frame for the 4way rollers.

5m. WTF !! This worries me. 5 turns on drum should be ample to keep it from breaking grub screw and coming off. 5m suggests motor is not strong enough, or gearing is up the shit, to pull on last lay of rope.

Cant see how its a gearing thing. the less cable on the drum the lower gearing it is, they would not try to increase gearing by using extra cable on the spool.

My guess would be its to stop where the cable it attached coming free by using the friction of the extra winds. 5m is a heck of alot when i think about it though.

what diameter is the hub they wind onto 70mm approx? if so that would mean nearly 12 winds still on the hub.

It's probably a typo or something. 4-5 winds on the drum should be plenty to prevent undue stress on the fixing screw. First layer of drum is where you have maximum pulling capability (less load on motor), this load increases as more cable is used. So, last layer on drum winch is working hardest. Could mean that they don't gaurantee their winches on last layer or they meant to say leave 5 winds of rope on drum. Red paint for 5m gives indication over bonnet when veiwing from in-cab.

I use a Brawn 9500lb winch, which many have bagged the shit out of for years. It's been used in anger many times, including whilst underwater, and through thick mud. I've had it for about 7yrs. Solenoids shit themselves once so brawn replaced them with Albrights (titan). I blew the motor up last year (navi let cable bunch up to one side and boom) Replaced motor with tigerz for $150 delivered. Internally it did not have a drop of water in it.

If it's all you can afford, and you're not after the world's fastest winch then go for it. Pull it apart, pack the gearbox full of waterproof grease, silicon all terminal screws, casing joins, etc. and you should be right. I'd recommend getting a Titan solenoid and mounting it somewhere high and dry.

I've found most of these lowmount winches to be interchangable with most bits and pieces. Warns are distinctly different though, and better, and faster, and more e$$y

it's 5 wraps it's paint red for the last 5 wraps, 64mm drum.

says to wind out as much cable as you can as the inner most layer offers the greatest pulling power.

it says to use a snatch block and double line arrangment to allow you to do the above.

Remembering back to the physics behind it, I think the general theory is that 3 turns is pretty much impossible to slip - given reasonable friction levels, which steel on steel should be.

Say 5 turns minimum, and Dufus can go a turn or two beyond that before they're in trouble.

yeh, but catering for the retards who would think "oh another turn wont matter". If i was writing the manual, I would say 10 turns. If the drum is 70mm thats only a total of 2.2m left on the drum, and would allow for the dicks who go beyond the "limit"
