Hi i have had my lockrite in the front for about 1.5 years and then transferred it to the rear and have had it there for prob 2 years...

Now while i was in the high country the other week, i noticed large bangs and clunks coming for the diff...

Long story short, i have pulled it apart and noticed 4 flat spots on the cross pin (about 2-3mm deep).

Is this normal for them to wear out the pin which gave it excessive backlash in the centre (definately not from the crownwheel and pinion)
The tailshaft had 3/4 of a turn of backlash.

EDIT: does any one have the clearances that you have to check when setting one up. i wouldn't mind having a check to see if the packers are worn.

those flats are machined into the shaft, not wear.

the wear will show up in line with then but on the rounded part, only a few thou will cause issues clearance wise, go and get a new one toyota sell them for about $30.

So where would the back lash come from i wonder.

as i understand there is always going to be a certain amount but not 3/4 of a turn on the tail shaft when there is hardly any in the cw and pinion?

Any ideas?

My surf diff had a X shaft, not just a pin (4 pinion, not 2).
They rely on that pin to work the mechanism, if the flats were in the wrong spot you could get lash.
Can you get a shaft without the flats is my thought?

it is possible for me to turn the pin 90 degrees and redrill the hole (on the right hand side in the pic) this would me it would be driving on a different spot on the cross pin... But not sure if it would fix it...

i have another cross pin in the shed, ill have to dig it out and have a look to see what the difference is between them...

For something that was so noisy i would have thought it would be something obvious...

sounds like the diff needs the backlash set up properly, if you don't do this you could destroy the locker.
It shouldn't have that much play in it.

Hey Brad how do you find the lockrite in the rear on road?? I have mine in the front and was thinking of getting one for the back but have heard that they can make a heap of noise and arn't much fun to drive when it is wet, any info would be great...

check that the springs pushing the 4 dowels are still as stiff as they should be, as i've been told that as these weaken over time, the whole assembly becomes louder.

I would check the crush tube as it sounds like it has crushed under load and now you have more backlash than you are supposed to.

When you run a center in the front now talking low pinion as it comes under load it tries to screw the pinion into the crown wheel.Now this is how you have run the car for a long time so ever time you loaded it up big time it has tried to do this but the crown wheel wont let it move very much due to the contact between the 2 matting gears.

Now you place this same center down the rear now when you load it up the pinion tries to screw itsself out away from the crown wheel.Now the only thing stopping this is the crush tube under extreme loads it will crush down thus giving you more backlash between your crown wheel and pinion.I would get the center set up again but with a solid spacer you can by them from Locked up 4x4 or Trailgear they come as a solid spacer and a set of shims.
