The whole G16a / b thing can be a bit misleading. Don't worry too much wether it is a G16a or G16b.
The options you have to choose from, going from easiest to hardest (and worst to best) are:
1. 1600 block with your 1300 head and carb. Pro's - easy install, con's - least power of all 1600's.
2. 1600 8 valve carbed Vitara engine. Pro's - easy install, no wiring etc, con's - again, power - less than EFI versions.
3. 1600 8 valve TBI (throttle body / single point injection) Vitara. Pro's - EFI! more power. Better off idle torque than 16 valve (good offroad), but less power. Con's - wiring to install, less power than 16 valve
4. 1600 16 valve multipoint injected Vitara. Pro's - EFI, most power. Con's less off idle torque, wiring to install.
5. 1600 16 valve Baleno engine. Pro's - late model engine, EFI, power, low manifold height means good bonnet clearance. Con's - same as 1600 16 valve Vitara, plus water pipe fabrication required to get water from back of head to radiator, or use Jimny manifold.
They are all much the same to physically install. All require sump swapping and oil pickup cut & shut. The Baleno also needs a crank angle sensor in the front of the sump - another cut & shut job.
All need the 1600 narrow body starter and 1300 clutch.
Obviously the EFI ones need a bit more work sorting wiring and installing high pressure fuel pumps, but its well worth it in my opinion, EFI drives so much nicer.

I've seen several different G16A's running MPFI, Throttlr Body, Carb, etc., etc.
