304 or 308 conversion into GQ

Post by whythef@#!not »

hey guys first of all wats the difference in these motors the 304 and 308 and would you recommend one of the 2, i want to put a fuel injected v8 in my 90 petrol GQ and these seem to be the way to go and reasonably priced but what other costs would be involved in doing this conversion.

304 came in with the black motor and was under 5.0L for racing. Fundamentally the same, just a slight ofset of the crank grind, in fact the crank is still cast as 308 in the early black motors (VK VL) The VL had L34 valves per standard to make up for lost perfomance with unleaded, the B cast head. The VL Walkinshaw through to the VT series 1 was fundumentally the same in that the valve configuration was different to suit the heads and due to this the camshaft is not interchangeable with earlier engines (the configuration is inlet/exhaust/inlet/exhaust whereas the old was inlet/inlet exhaust/exhaust). Also the Black motors got better rods from VL (I think VL) Manifolds are not intercangeble from early to late head types.
For performance the later heads are far better (VL Walkinshaw on) the block had some changes towards the end of the VR where the 355 was an option from HSV, there was clearance for the extra stroke. Although you can grind any old block for this. The series 3 VS saw taller lifter bores to suit the roller camshaft, this carried into the VT series 1.

Cheers
