URGENT - Hilux boken down

Post by daveo »

Ok, as murphys alw dictates, im going to fraser island tomorrow and my hilux broke down this arvo. Fark.

The veice is a 1998 3.0 Hilux (5L engine)

Drove around all arvo doing jobs, no probs. Driving up a hill just near home and the car gave a sort of surge/cough. kept going, rapidly lost power then finally dies just round the corner from home. Engine turns over no worries just does not fire. rang RACQ, the 2 of us decided it is a fuel prob but he was of no futher use.

Have put in a new fuel filter. I can blow down the feed line back to the tank and hear it bubble. Took the line off the injector pump and fuel is getting there when using the primer pump on the fuel filter.

Any ideas/tips? Please dont let it be the injector pump.

thanks

Not a guru or anything, But what about the fuel shut down solinoid. If this was stuffed you won't go anywhere.

On the 1hz there is a oil pressure switch that can also stop the engines from starting. I dont know if the 5l have the same, but would believe so.

Stupid question, have you checked all your fluid levels?

Did you put petrol in it like my old man did? He got about 50km before the car surged then stopped dead. Been driving a diesel for 20 years, and he still managed to grab the unleaded nozzle

As mentioned.
Check your timing belt, however, they normally just cut out straight away when the belt breaks, or skips a tooth.
If your belt is ok,

I would remove the air tube from filter to inlet maniflod, and make sure your butterfly smooth shut down is in the open position when ign is on, if its stuck shut, it wont run at all. you will see it once the air tube is removed. It should open on cranking. If not.

Hold it open and try starting it, and see if its stays open when running.

If thats not it.

Put power to your idle stop solenoid, and see if you can feel it click and operate.
If not, check for power getting to it, on both sides of the connection.
If power, remove solenoid, remove plunger and spring, refit, prime, and try to start.
I think there is also a screen filter around the idle stop solenoid that can block, but thats pretty uncommon.

Let us know what you find.

Failing this, check for air bubbles with a clear piece of hose.
Start between pump, and filter, and work your way back.

Let us know how you go.

check the simple things first before panicking ;)

Had a "similar" thing happen to my Hilux.
Got the RACV out to have a look and it was discovered that there was no power running to the Injector Pump ( wouldnt pump fuel ). He couldnt work out why it had happened, so he ran a new wire directly from the pump to power ( as a temparary fix ) That was 2 years ago -- works fine.
Went to an Auto Elec and he couldnt work out why either, and said he could have a look at it, but its like " how long is a piece of string "? -- meaning to find the problem he would have to start at one end and finish at the other end to work out where the problem is which could mean BIG $$$$$$$

Thats only good for the non electronic pumps, like if your engine description on the silver plate on the firewall DOES NOT have E at the end. If it's a 5L-E serious damage could be done to the Spill Valve or ECU.

Spill control valve only runs on about 5v, is contantly variable (thats how it adjusts its fueling rates) and is about $900 genuine!

Thankfully it happened near home, and not in the middle of the trip :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

as it turns out one of the exhaust valves seized up which jammed the cam shaft causing the timing belt to break. looking at about $2500 including getting the injectors done while its all apart.

If this is diesel your've probably got diesel in the tank but it's not enbough for the pump to suck it up and it'll die while going up hills.

I've had it happen to me while thinking I'd have just enough to get by, lol :D.

The fix chuck in some more diesel prime it up and your good to go.
