Hey, sorry to ask again, get confused by every one saying to cut guards, can do cant do or go bigger, what is the minumim lift necasary to fit a set of 33 x 12.5's on a 90 gq LWB? thanks
I'm running 305/70/16s MTZ which according to the Mickey Thompson website isa 33.1 x 12.0, on black ROH steel rims, koni long travel shocks and Aurora heavy duty 50mm lifted springs with no hassles whatsoever at all. The ride is fantastic and the tyres don't foul the guards.
I did take the mud guards and wheel arch flairs off and ran Bushranger Flexi flairs around each wheel arch though.
There would be punters around with the same tyres / same lift on a GQ and the tyres will foul the guards. There are so many variables that can affect your wheel travel (driving style, spring strength etc) that it is hard to say whether or not this setup will work for you on your 4wd.
There are different suspension setups to suit different types and styles of 4wding. I run heavy duty springs because my GQ is set up for touring. If I wanted a weekend warrior, I wouldn't have 33s and a 50mm heavy duty springs.
Bear in mind that when you start lifting your truckmore than 2 inches or 50mm it starts to be more than just springs and shocks that need to be changed.
Have a think about what sort of 4wding you do or plan on doing, and get a suspension / tyre setup that suits your requirements and budget. You are going to be spending a bit of money, so make a purcahse that does what you what it to do.

Used to run 33's on 1st gq with 4" susp lift...it still rubbed on inner rear guards at full articulation so if 2" is cheaper for you then just do that. If you have some spare cash then go that little bit more just in case you want 35's one day.

I ran 33 BFG muddies on sagged stock spring. Had to take flares off though, it rubbed on back inner guard. Went 4" springs and my new 33's still rub, then put in 30mm coil spacers still rubs, now also have 30mm body lift...... it stil rubs. This is with 15x8 "cruiser" offset rims. You can run with no lift. Make sure you trim the rear seat belt bolt as it'll slice the tyre a bit if you don't. Have pics of it stock if wanted!

I never hit the outer gaurds why cut them for 33's heres 2 shots with stock minus flares. Then with all the lift as above. Simple answer is it'll hit the inner guard unless you change bumpstops or keep swaybars on also. With factory flare go 2" and you wont have trouble.

You'll be right...like everyone has said you will get by on 2" suspension lift alone, your front tyres won't rub at all it's just the rear and they still rub with 4" susp lift and/or 2' susp lift and body lift. Just make sure you trim back the rear seat belt bolts cos thats where the tyres will rub and you'll know where they rub cos you get this nice shiny clean patch of metal appearing lol.
