Advice on buying a hilux - 93 twin cab, 2.8 Turbo Diesel

Post by Pagey_1 »

Hi Guys,

Im looking at buying a Hilux Twin cab 2.8 Turbo running 12psi.
Its got 2in body lift
Mags with 35 in Micky Thompsons
ARB bullbar with winch, tow bar, compressor, rear air locker, snorkel ec.
30,000kms on reco engine

I have checked it out and it seems to be in really good condition.

When we undid the oil cap to check the blow by some oil came out, is this common with the 2.8 diesels?

Also is there anything else that i should be looking at on this bus, any common faults, things to check etc?

i know it needs lifting more due to guard rub, will resetting the springs 2-3in higher be sufficient?

Cheers inadvance!

Rust in top of doors behind rubbers, around windscreen (obvious sanding marks in bog) and dirt build-up in chassis. Broken engine mounts. Rust in firewall, test with a hose on windscreen for water penetration.

As far as i am aware 12psi is more than the 3L engine is happy with. The engine may have been built to handle it. In all of the reserch i've done to hopefully wind up the boost on mine it all points towards don't do it.

yeah i was thinking that i read that most people run 11psi max. So does your engine have much blow by, in other words if you take the oil cap off while running does it shoot any oil out?..... anyone?

Cheers

Mine is the same: 9PSI and hardly any blow by...
Check the swivel hubs and see if they are leaking (might show if a re build is needed, check to see if inner guards are cracked (mostly the LHS), check to see if gearbox is leaking oil, check uni's on tail shafts...

All normal things to check but will give you an idea..

They will still rub. I have 2" body and 2" spring and my 33's still rub when it flexes. Your 35's are obviously going to rub worse.

Ah shite not looking good then, so if you guys take the oil cap off while idleing you wouldnt have any oil come out the top at all? Reason i ask is this engine was rebuilt 30000kms ago with pistons to suit the turbo so it should be good. also how do i check the swivel hubs??? Already checked all the others and they are all A1.

Also what is involved in moving the diff forward 50mm? what parts would i need for that and what cost?

Cheers for the help guys, not real good with 4wds.

Shorter draglink and adj torque rod and tailshaft spacer or longer shaft or do it righ the first time and go hi steer it changes steering arms and needs a diffrent steringbox mounted on the chassis http://www.locktup4x4.com.au/product/64 ... aaf0b.aspx Costs more but a far better way to get the diff foward

ah righto, well thats not too bad, still havent brought it yet but reckon i will, just doing my homework first!

Spoke to a mate who works at toyota today and he said that the spitting oil issue isnt bad, i need to pull the dipstick out and check if anything is blowing out there.

Another question how many kms do you guys get out of a tank of diesel in your 2.8TD?

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming!

Is it a diesel compression tester? A petrol tester will explode.

450-500 PSI is good with about 20 PSI over all cylinders variance maximum

You'll get oil spit out the top every time. The rockers are quite close to the top there so there'll be a little bit of spit regardless. 3L's are nutorious for blow by. I remember seeing a brand spanking 3L lux ages ago and it had blowby then. They just do that. I had a new motor about 15000k ago and i worried about the oil for a few weeks till diesel guy told me they all do it and blowby. Pull out the dipstick and it'll still blow smoke. Good way to test other diesels though. Best thing for you to do is a comp test to see the motor's condition.

They are expensive. People don't like lending them out either, because it's east to damage them if fuel combusts. Injector lines must be first undone, fuel pumped out of cylinders before connecting the tester.

Does that mean you would have to blead them afterwards?

No, no, but you might have to when your finished, they usually self bleed. I said it because you don't want fuel to ignite while your doing the test, because if you think 500PSI is a lot wait till you get diesel combustion. The tester could explode in your face.

Another thing i should really ask, what would you guys realistically expect to pay for somthing like this, considering it is VERY VERY neat and a near new engine.

Hilux Twin cab 2.8 Turbo running 12psi.
2in body lift
Mags with 35 in Micky Thompsons (brand new!!!)
ARB bullbar with winch, tow bar, compressor, rear air locker, snorkel etc.
30,000kms on reco engine
Full Stereo
UHF
Fibreglass canopy
Tubliner
Driving lights
Pretty much all the expensive comforts

BULLSH!T Mine got blowby just before it went byebye rebuilt now and i don't have blowby. Mine went byebye at 12psi
Keep looking or keep a spare $5000 handy for when the engine dies not including a turbo rebuild ;)
You need a leak down tester to test a diesel compression and yes they are held tightly by anyone who owns one; you might need to pay someone to have it tested.

I rekcon it sounds abit dodgy.
if it has receipts from a shop and all for the engine and the rest i'd pay 10K.

but if he doesnt (and id ring the shop to confirm and explore a warranty etc with the shop) id pay 6k and keep your spare $$ for a possible rebuild.

Yeah right, it has a sticker on the engine saying engine reco and new timing belt/chain at .....kms which was 30,000 ago.

he is asking 17k but i was gonna offer 15, thats if the engine is good cond. I might try and get it tested.

Where else can i look for a simlilar bus for sale?
