Removing Airbag Steering Wheel from a GU

Post by MD4x4 »

Hi,

After putting a 4" lift kit in my GU the steering wheel is about 110deg out.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the steering wheel without setting the air bag off so I can centre up the steering wheel?

OR

Is there another way to correct the position of the steering wheel?

Regards

MD

the easiest way is to get a adjustable front steering arm. Saves any hassles so you don't break the clock spring for the air bag

Yes.

Just been through the same issue.
lifted the truck, fitted adjustable panhard rods to re center the diffs and out whent the steering wheel by 90 deg.
also have a Airbag GU.
Fixed it with a H/D Adjustable drag link ( Cheezy Racing one)

Cheers

you can straighten the wheel by a couple of methods quite easily but if you get it wrong the clock spring can break. that will be an expensive mistake

steering

I was thinking about disconnecting the steering coupling and knocking the casting off the shaft splines then repositioning the casting on the splines when the steering wheel is back to centre.

Anyone done this?

Seriously, its easier and safer to buy a HD adjustable drag link.

By lifting more than 2" you've made that critical steering link heaps more vunerable to impact on just about anything. It won't hurt to have a stronger item on there and it allows you to change it again at a moment's notice if you decided to go higher/lower.

I also went up 4", bought and fitted the adjustable steering link, but it didn't totally correct the steering wheel misalignment without affecting the "centre" position of the steeting box output shaft (ie exactly in the middle between full lock L to full lock R). So i did the link AND the above mentioned method of disconnecting the steering input shaft from the box and moving it a few splines one way to bring the wheel back into alignment.

NB - make sure you get the locking grub bolt on the splines seated back into the divot designed for it, or it could come loose!
