I would think the off-road GPS units would be heaps better but this would be nice simply because you have all the 4wd maps set up and running so that alone would make the whole map thing 99% easier.

That's really expensive. For less than that you could get a great mini laptop that'd run all the maping software you'd need and also double as an mp3 player, dvd player, mp4 player, photo bank etc etc.
The new upgraded Asus eeepc running Windows with 1gb of ram and 12gb of solid sate memory is around $540. Add Copilot, Oziexplorer and a few maps and you've got a great GPS PC.

This is why I have not bought a stand alone GPS unit as i dont see the value, other than their compactness, in havin a stand alone unit just for navigation.

Edit: I guess for a stand alone unit it is pretty good value, it has every street & topographical map in Australia on it. To buy those at 10 bucks a pop or to buy the software could cost that, or more, alone.
I did notice Pat said that he keeps a topo map handy anyway just in case. IMHO I really only use GPS in the city where its harder to just pull off & have a look at the map. Even in foggy conditions (as Pat said) a topo map is useful & any good map reader will be able to pinpoint their location (sory off topic a bit).

This does all of that apart from DVD which i would never use in the car; if i have to admire the scenery so can my passengers and it has a mount, how do you mount a notebook easily

It will cost me <$200 when I am finished. The device is essentially a Windows PC with a GPS function built in. 'Hack up' is just running another application. It's the same as running Word or Excel on your desktop computer.

Hey guys, I run a 7 inch gps i bought off ebay running windows CE. It came with the navteq software which works great around the city and also has 98% of bush tracks that i drive as well. I also have loaded up Ozi Explorer CE version to use off road.

Its a touch screen so the stylus that comes with it is quick and easy to use. Runs off a 4gb sd card. In my zook, space is limited and this sits nicely on the dash out of the way. I was thinking of a laptop but this also has mp3 player, vid player, reverse camera/av input.

The gps hardware is very very quick and I never use the external antenna just the built in one.

Just another option for those not wanting to spend big bucks. cost me just under 300 all up.

He has offered the old one to me for $200 ( selling for $399 at Officeworks ) but it can be loaded with Windows if you know what you are doing. Has a 4 GB solid drive and is lightweight. Would be an ideal carputer because you can take it anywhere.

Screen can be converted to touchscreen for not much money if you are handy with a soldering iron.

How would it void warranty? Instead of running their supplied Navigatior from the SD Card you Run Ozi or whatever. It even states in the manual you can change the Navigation software, so no hack or warranty issues there.

I wouldn't use the first version. Yes you can put Windows on it but the memory and Ram are so small you can't really run anyting else. The extra for the new version is worth the coin I reckon.

This is basically what the Hema Navigator is with the software already loaded on. If you look at the screen shot they are using the same Ozi software.


A lot of money can be saved. Any of the Ebay GPS units that run of an SD card can be made to work. See the Patrol 4x4 site for more details.

You can load XP stripped down on it but there goes most of your HDD, there is heeeaps on Goooogle about it
If you only want it for OziExplore and not much else (camera software, email browsing etc) install OE on the HDD and run the maps on a 4~8Gig SD memory card. The EEE has a card reader built in. I have a 120gig USB drive for storing photos, mp3s etc
Had mine since before xmas and still haven't got a round to it

You an also run OE with Linux using Wine windows emulator but that is too hard for me a I am Linux stoooopid. The destructions are on OE website (in FAQs I think)

they where selling the Hema Navigators at the Hema tent at the coffs harbour 4wd, campign and boating show on the weekend, $990, it did look pretty shmick tho, id love to buy one.
