Why u need a locker :) + Stength issues

Post by nicbeer »

after some info is this a common thing to break or a one off possibly.

mud uphill, needed to use a lot of noise. rear dropped into hole and flicked me out airborne and when landed snapped the uni on the transfer end into two parts, snapped both sides off one cross of the uni.

second thing to break on same hill may have been but still had drive till short drive later. i had blown all the bolts off the LHS hub. had to single spin it out and then got towed back to mates place.

anyone else done that to a hub.

will update some pics when i have them. and video if i can get off slack mate.

other misc bits for the week are a slow leak in a tyre and mudflap missing.

Nic

I think these are maintenance problems, neither are common overload related breaks in suzukis.

unis where 3 months old but i can attest to the jaring may of broken that.

hub is unknown. How u do maintenance on that? as they were checked they were tight a couple weeks ago. I am going to replace them with 8.8 bolts during the week. worst thing is i lost the cones with it.

more the case has anyone else killed a hub like that?

Hub bolt breakage is common on dana diffs that don't run cone washers but I really can't say I've ever come across it before- even in really hard worked cars with over 35" tyres.... I don't even think they have had a failure rate run on the rear with full floating hubs... ( at least I hope not )

I can only suggest the cones/bolts were damaged and not as tight as you thought they were?

the transfer could have moved, bound up the the yokes, and then snapped the uni. rarely seen a uni snap on its own.

Going by your avatar and the associated video I can see why they broke...

Drew - not sure on cone washers, going up to the shed hunting later, I should have a set or two here. May have to look into using the cap bolts instead of the 8.8 HT ones i was going to use.

Joe - transfer is mounted with bolts and rubber, but yes would have stopped and uni kept going.

I have killed the diff uni before i know but not this one before.

GRPABT1 - yeh same area actually, Brunswick but this was diff spot and not soo much air time. only kicked up from a big rut.

Couple pics showing the hill, uni and hub bolts.

Um Nicbeer, Where's one of the hub bolts? If they weren't coming loose, there should be broken bolts in all the hub holes.

The CV should go long before the hub bolts.

Also, the mating surface looks grimy/dirty - shoudl be clean and have some silicone.clean steel/gasket on it? I reckon that hub was backing off. Have a look at the hub and see if there's any evidence the conical holes were being ovalised by the cones smashing backwards and forwards.

How's your rear driveshaft length? It's possible the shaft bottomed, pushing the case up at the rear and binding the uni?

PS that's an easy track in Vic :finger:

ha ha. yeh cheers steve, it was a not too bad track. had traction all the way cept for the damn hole that kicked me out.

All the broken bolts are in there, we have got them all out now, that pic may have been after i removed one of them.

the bolts broke clean to the face of the huband lower and no bolts to be seen once the hub fell off when i stopped on the track. This was after driving on the hub so grease has swung around, there was traces of rtv on there and it was not leaking before it happened.

Std rear shaft, 2"OME lift in there. but yeh possible as it was after a small airborne.

Many moons ago I went through a stage of breaking hub bolts, then changed the diff housing (bent) and never broke another although I think either loose or overtightened bolts were the cause.

I also snapped a front uni exactly the same a month back, I was in a very steep rut and it was hopping a little as all four were biting for traction and then it let go. The uni's were also only a few months old and I blame myself for buying Repco parts which were never designed for the abuse I give them (the bearing in the rear one gave up weeks later). Being a longy my rear shaft is not at any severe angle and axle wrap bar is fitted so binding did not occur in my case.
