Rear bar

Just a question to those who have made there own rear bar for any vehicle. what do you use to make your swing arms, eg stub axle and bearings, or a coulple of pieces of pipe. any info and any pics would be great, would also like to see some rear bar designs if you have pics.

I used a stub axle and bearing, a search on here found it for me, it was from a trailer place in Perth I think.

thanks for that steve, just wondering what size pipe you had to use to go over the stub axle.
did you have to get the pipe machined for the lower bearing.

That's the one I used, much easier to just get the stub, bearings and nice steel collar than trying to get bits of pipe etc.

I have always just used a trailer stub axle and cheapest hub I can get. Then just cut the flange off (sometimes a friend machines them down if I get the time) then just weld RHS straight to the hub. Never had a problem and now completed 5 rear bars and never had any issues. It is not like it now takes the weight and heat of trailer.

So you just cut the excess off a hub a welded straight onto that?

Aren't the hubs cast? Doesn't this make it harder to weld onto?

If this is ok to weld to a cut down hub, then this will save me a lot of time.

I believe they are cast and have heard that welding to cast can be a problem. But I have now made 5 bars with that method swing anything from 30 to 35 inch tyres over some rough terrain with no issues.

I have a 190 AMP mig welder and just turn it up to full power when welding to the hub.

I suppose if it was a critical component under a lot of stress they may be issues. Most of my wheel carriers are not even supported on a latch they pivot with the door using a tie rod arm and rubber stopper to stop moving it back and forwards.
