VQ30DET into GQ patrol

Post by Evan »

Well its christmas day, woohoo... santa didn't bring me a new 4wd :(

VH45DE into patrol.... ok but VH45 isn't too cheap.

What about a VQ30DET into a GQ ?
In the US i believe the brand new GU's have an option on VQ35DE ?

VQ30DET is light, good power (compared to the old 4.2 petrol), cheap !
Most are auto, i guess you could use the auto with the VQ and graft on a patrol transfer case some how. Proberbly have to move the engine forward a few inchs being a v config.

Could be a decent swap, any thought comments ?

VH45DE 278hp / 292 flb (206kw/294nm)
VQ30DET 280hp / 285 flp (206kw/284nm)

The VH45 is $3000-3500
Dont think you will get much cheaper, and there are people who have done the hard work for you already with Kyles one.

The $10 you would save with the VQ, would cost you in getting fitted and shit like that...

YMMV

VQ30DET's can be had a reasonable amount cheaper. less than $2k with auto.

As you say atleast the VH45 your not re-inventing anything, but i wouldn't think the VQ would present too many more problems.
Atleast with a VH45 you dont need to worry about intercoolers and piping and turbos etc..... That is unless you super charge or turbo it.

Just a thought i guess.

Hand made adapters, manifolds, lots of shit, thats why the kit fitted by Sandy at Aus4wd on the VH45 is around $12k according to Kyle, theres shit loads of work involved.

SSS Automotive have VH45s in stock for 2500 complete. That is where I got mine from and the conversion is definately worthwhile. I am using the VH automatic which made the addition of the transfer case really easy and it is easier to drive too...

Actually you maybe right, i did my search again and i could have mistaken one of there pathfinder varients as a patrol (looked like one)
lucky buggers they got the titan v8 in pathfinders !

SSS have VQ30DET's for more than the VH45DE's !
(usually the reverse)

They do turn up cheaper than this. I paid considerably less out of the trading post.

IMHO a VH45 would be better in a 4wd that a VQ30 (which is pretty much the same as a VH45 but minus two cylinders).

With a turbo motor you have less compression, which means less engine braking and less power down low. Not really optimum for a 4WD.
