God of Magnificant Ideas!
they have a ....(cant think of the exact name of it but its something like a ) "polarity diode", I did one a few years ago in a 24volt truck..... every other wire in the dash was 12volt BUT the one I picked....
cost $50 for a local tec (next town along) to fix it of which $12.00 was postage/packaging & insurance.

Yep they have a protection diode in them. Most of the time the unit will still work even after its poped. But they can be repaired.....
All it is, is a reverse polarity diode across the power wires. When connected properly, the diode does nothing. If you connect the wires wrong, the diode causes a short circuit blowing the fuse. That way all the power goes through the diode (easiest route) so the rest of the radio survives.
Moral to the story: ALWAYS have a seperate fuse inline with your CB
Note: According to Murphy's Law, a $300 picture tube will blow first to save a 10c fuse!!!
