$5000 to spend on a standard 2h... what to do?

hey guys should have about 5k to spend on the truck soon. just wonderin what to spend it on. obviously a good turbo set up, once i do a comprression test ill decide if i chuck some rings and bearings in it. maybe the injectors and pump. what esle can i do? will a cam do anything in a diesel?

what does it need?

just engine? or suspension, gearbox, clutch, rust cut out, tires, ?? Maybe worth lookin at updating your rig...
$5k and your rig and get a GQ or similar or somethign else.

If its just the engine thats tired yea turbo and re-ring/bearings could be a good option..

Could easily blow 4-5k on a turbo kit, 2k on pump/injector rebuild, 2k on top end freshen up etc.

Don't expect to get an awful lot out of 5k (unless you're doing all the work yourself)

I would look for a 12HT and spend the 5Gs on that.

yeah i dont really want a 12h-t it would be nice but i have 2 spare 2h's here and they r cheaper on parts

But they dont like hills...the 12ht has big balls std and are more reliable than 2ht.
U could spend the 5k on lockers and suspension...or park it and go to Canada for a ski...

Lol. Canada Mmm, yes certainly sounds better than a 2H after 5g spent on it. Sell both the 2h engines and put it towards the 12Ht.

I smacked a turbo on my old 2h after compression testing & all the rest of the jazz... Unless you do a full workover - I wouldn't recommend it. I was only running 4 pound boost.

It'll go like a shower of S*%T but they can only take it so long before the original rings drop out its ass and the story just goes on from there :bad-words: :bad-words: ...

12ht vote here too, had one, trust me its tuff, i broke everything else around it but it, sure if the injector pump goes your up for a bit, but make sure its all in good nick, look after it and you will have no dramas........

i wish i never sold me old truck, i want it back, i want my 12ht back, so much beta than the 3.8 commodore i drive now!!!

Yep i have a 2H turbo in my 60 which will make way for a 12HT when funds permit...can't go past a 12HT!! :)

If you do the work yourself you`ll do it for under 5g depending what motor you go with :cool:
I`d go a 350 chev and put it on gas, get the $2000 grant and it now cheeper to run then any smelly diesel :armsup: :D

I loved my old 2h turbo. It was a weapon.

I had a Denco turbo kit, then i custom fitted a front mount intercooler. Used to run 13psi boost. Never had any dramas.

I used to keep it well serviced though. Tuned it with a pyro to get fuelling spot on.

Sure a 12ht is a good motor, but the 2h isn't given enough credit for being a tough old girl. It would keep neck and neck with a multivalve 80 series TD, but actually had awesome low down torque.

would going a 12ht be any better than going a 1hz? 1hz is about the same power, only at higher revs. you could then turbo the 1hz cheap for even more. 1hd is also an option but probably not at 5k.

reason i mention is because i rekon the 1hz would be a more driveable motor than a 12ht. it's also stronger and would likely outlast a 12ht

Take both for a drive and you will throw the paper away...hills dont slow a 12ht, and if you put a intercooler in it, and turn up boost, they are even better....comparison wise, 1hz -2h 12ht-1hdt

A 12ht will outlast a 1HZ with a turbo by miles! But yes a 1HZ is more driveable jsut because they rev a bit better.

a 12ht is a bolt in swap

1hz means you need to do exhaust (other side of car) re-route air fuel etc etc. Not to mention engine mounts, new bellhousing(if you can find one off a late 75series to suit the h55f) or whole gearbox+bellhousing.

You can get a complete 12ht powered 60 series for about 5 grand these days (theres one in the for sale section i believe) Engine will be tired tho, probably need a freshen up. If you can do it yourself, cheap as $2k for a full rebuild kit. less for just rings and bearings.

import 12ht's go for about 6k with supposedly low miles.

iff i had my time again i would not have spent $4k on rebuilding my 2h with plans to turbo (never got round to turbo). You just cant beat having an engine that was designed to have a turbo on the side.

yeah im goin to get a 12h-t our other 60 with the 12h-t isnt as good as my mates 2h turbo. so im goin to put a garrett t04, intercooler. dose any one have a 12h-t they wanna sell?

a std supra turbo is a size up on the 12ht, but will bolt straight on.

what is the boost curve like for the supra turbo compared to a standard 12-HT turbo?

Just asking as I am currently rebuilding my 12-HT and I have been informed by the place who are doing the turbo that the exhaust housing is cracked, so I need another. (cost around $700.00 and that is for a second hand one)

Does a 1HDT have the same turbo as a 12-HT? I am sure they are both Toyota CT-26 turbos (supra is a CT-26 also), but are they the same internally?

The kit and cooler are still going great guns :D

Having driven past a 12ht with very similiar load situation up Copeland Tops State Forest in Barrington , the turb'd and cooled 2h just keeps on climbing past :D
2H Intercooled = It really goes.

The boost curve of the supra is higher in the rev range, full boost about 2000, which is not really that good for a 12ht running max torque at 1800 but....once boosted, it has less exhaust restriction, so more power further up the rev range....the compresser on a supra turbo is larger, hense it delivers more for each revolution, this compensates somewhat for the lag. There is a new supra turbo on ebay now for 300...By the way, if you look at this differently, the new hdfte in th 100 series runs a 12ht and hdt sized exhaust housing, and a supra front housing. They run 13 psi std. For driveability, i would stick to a smaller rear housing, but if you want more power, you will have to look at bigger less restriction setups and more boost.

Cant go wrong with the 12ht motors but the outlay for the engine and freshen up will set you back a arm and a leg, but would grab a 12ht in a heatbeat if it was a low k motor with good compression.
