Hilux Box-DIY Repair or Pay?

I have a 95 4wd hilux 2.8 and managed to tear a couple of teeth out of reverse. (Long story). I have mucked around with the car a bit but the only work i ever did on the gearbox was replacing the oil. How big a job is it to replace the reverse gear? Is it worth just paying?
