MK-MQ Valve Clearance

Hi Guys! I am an italian man of 36 from Rome! I'd need to know the
correct procedure to set the correct valve clearance on my sd33t
Patrol 1988. On the manual they say set it at 0.35 mm warm engine. What is the right temperature to set them. I think that is a bit difficult to reach cause during the setting the temp of the motor could change i think i can spent about half an hour to do the operations and the temp could
change!!!!. What is the piston number 1 ? I know the spark order is
1-4- 2-6-3-5. Is that correct? Where are the signs to reach the top dead
center?

As long as the motor is warm i wont matter. 0.35 is the right setting. You have to get the valves rocking, which means if you want to set no1 tappets you would have to get no6 rocking which means turning the motor over until the EX valve shuts & the Inlet has just started to open.

the engine won't cool that much for it to both about while setting clearance's. but before start take it out and give the truck a good run to ensure its at running temp

timing marks are on the front of the timing case and they line up with the mark on the harmonic balancer. hard to see them, put hand down on the timing case and you will feel them.

valve clearance instructions shortened from the gregory's

1/ set number one piston to top dead centre on compression stroke (both valves on number one closed) (cylinder 6 is one just closing and the other just opening)

2/ use feeler gauge to check clearance between valve stem and rocker is .35mm when hot. both valves can be done at this point

3/ before moving engine check inlet on no's 3 and 5. exhaust on 2 and 4

4/ rotate engine 360 degree's in normal direction until valves of no.1 are rocking and timing marks line up.

5/ now check inlet 2, 4 and 6. exhaust 3, 5 and 6.

here in the philippines. we adjust the valves when the engine is cold are .14mm. thats whats stated in the service manual. is that the same as .34 when its warm. cold is u left the car overnight and adjusted the valves before starting the car the next day :lol:

nah mate they are definetly not the same.
your mistaken as its .34"MM" or the equivelent is .14 in INCHES!!
you can set the tappets when the engine is cold. it really doesnt make much of a difference.

is it realy in inches? everything else on this engine is in metric...

oops not .14 inches. sorry ahha its .014 inches!! also known as 14thou

in the engine specs books at work they have all the measurments in mm's and in inches. just because alot of the old precision tools where inches only. but nowadays lots are metric.

Something worth knowing about the SD33 rocker arms.. After i had adjusted my valves a few time it still seemed to be too noisey in the rocker gear.. I pulled the rocker gear off and discovered that the end of the valve stem had actually started to wear into the rocker arm!! So when i set the clearance i didnt make up for how much the valve was going into the rocker.. Easy fix was to linish all the rocker arms so that there was indent that the valve stem could sit into..

Just my experiance
