Sounds like the pump is half shagged and there isn't enough pressure.........or the belt is loose.
I've seen heaps of 60's with bigger tyres than yours and no steering dramas.

If yours is 1980 - 1984 just upgrade your pump to an '85 - '89 pump. They are much stronger and less prone to leakage. You will need to change the mounting brackets to as they differ. Otherwise the 60 setup should turn any tyres pretty easy.

While we're on the topic... My steering seems to be a little "loose" when driving on roads. Basically there's not alot of noise but it seems to have a bit of play in it. It corners alright, it's keeping it in a straight line that I'm struggling with.

The steering box is leaking as well but I think it's more than just a leak. If it has that play in it do we think it's due for another box?

have you tried tighting the box up there is a screw and nut on top of the steering box just loosen off the nut and screw the screw in try that it might work

Yeah I was told that was a good option for a small adjustment but not being able to see inside the box you shouldnt adjust it up too much or it might end up putting too much pressure on the gears... Something like that.

I have a spare box which doesnt leak as much as my current one, just waiting for an input shaft seal to pop in it then I'll put that box in.

Might have a crack at reconditioning the old box when I pull it out to, how serviceable do they tend to be?

Might pay to check the uni's on the steering shaft too.

In the tie rods if i grab them and shake em and there's obious movement then there's an issue, if there's no movement then its all good? have I got that right?

As for the uni's... Would there be obvious movement if I grab them and try to shake them or move them? Or if not what do I check?
