GQ bent chasis at front

Just picked up a real nice coil cab from the auctions that has been hit right hand front.

The chasis is clearly bent toward the left hand side. As we are up the bush and dont have access to jigs, the mate was thinking to cut the front cross member and then anchor the left side chesis rail and try and pull the rails ove separtely, the inner guards and radiatot support are also pushed to the left as is the two front body mounts.

I was wondering also if anyone knew of a good coil cab chasis, i'm told you can use a wagon chasis and just weld the tray mounts from the old one onto it, but they look a little shorter at the rear rails than a coil cab chasis.

Appreciate any guidence as the rest of the truck is really spot on

Yep, orbost. Looks like the chasis swap might be the best way to go. Apparently that has to be engineered at a cost of around $700.00 got me stuffed its just the same as the one that was under it.

then do a dodge job and cut out the old numbers from the damaged chassis and paste them onto the new chassis

yeah good idea chunderlicious on that one ..... do it right and check wether truck as been a non-repairable write off before you do anything.

There is no problem swapping chasis, but there seems to be some debate as to whether it needs to be engineered.

Spoke to an engineer after my first post and he said, no it does'nt need to be engineered if its the same chasis, model etc. Then spoke to the blokes who certify repairable write offs and they say the latest manual from Vic Roads states you now have to engineer.

I will post tomorrow once I know what the requirements are here in Victoria so evryone knows. Now who has a a good chasis sitting in the yard they need moved.

in Qld you need to get a surragate (sp?) number from the police for the chassis swap, not done by an engineer. Effectively the old chassis number is deleted and a new one issued and stamped on.

Wagon and coil cab chassis are identicle aside from the safety loop under the ute cab either side of the rear output, and tray mounts. Both are easy to swap over.

My guess is that this does not apply to body on chassis style construction, as the body is not a stressed member. (purely a guess)

OK, here is the answer. Or so it seems, if the vehicle is older than 15 years it does not require engineers certificate, BUT still has to have the security check because its on the register. Over 15 years must be engineered. Bugger mines 5th month 1994, you can bet if I was able to wait they'd change the rules again.

OK I need a wagon chasis melbourne or east there of for preference, prefer 4 bolt engine mount type

Go into Vic Roads and ask them first, was going to do the same as you in replacing a bent chassis with a good one. Was informed law changes in the last couple of years has stopped this from been done :(.

I questioned the officer about this, his answer was it was a measure of stopping re-birthing.

I believe he is wrong in his interpretations, but to be safe go to Vic Roads an ask the question.

The info I put up in my last post comes direct from the vic roads manual, so long as you have receipts no problem, bearing in mind my comments re 15 years and the check done by security mob. Forget what they call them

This is the area that I was told was the problem area, replacing the chassis was deemed as the same as replacing the body as both body and chassis are classed as belonging to a single registered vehicle.
