GQ diffs under a toy

Post by hypo »

i know it has been done but all the ones i have seen have got coils all round i wanna run leaves in the front and coils in the rear..

it sounds like no problem but the narrowest i can get the spring perches on the front housing is about 80mm wider the the mounts on the lux

so my question is has anybody put leaves in the front of a lux with gq axle ?? if so can they tell me wot they have done and get some pix ??

i was gunna simply outboard the spring mounts on the chassis but if i do that my tyres will scrub on the springs at full lock coz the way the truck is now it is 6" wider than a standard lux and it is bout the same a a GQ width and they almost hit

so if i was 2 outboard the spring i wood need 2 run spacers on the gq stuff 2 get it 2 clear

any help ????

try that dude with the 45 Team Gadg on fire! He got them onto a 40 series chassis, and its narower than a hilux by a whole lot!!

also put a tyre on and steer it lock to lock and measure from inside to inside at full lock and subtract some and thats how far you cans teer without scrubbing... I would think the width would help heaps, getting it further from the steering box, guards, tray etc.??

Borrow a radius arm from a buddy, bolt it on and a wheel, see if it rubs the arm.this will be a good guide to see the limits of the steering lock and some ideas for perches. Also the kingpin widths will be wider on the GQ housing (as in where the knuckle pivots from, so the pivot point will be further out than on the toy housing without your hub spacers)

just took some rough measurements -

GQ radius arm mount centres - 850mm

Toy spring perch centres - 740mm

You only gotta make up 55mm each side. (using the drivers side as the reference point here - this side is where the perch mounting problem lies)

You could notch the Gq housing on the drivers side to create the perch halfway up the pumpkin, and match the height on the pass side.

Its gunna sound strange, but i don't think you will neeed the wheel spacers, and troy has sorta saiud waht i meant, the kinpin pivot point is further out, so it wont scrub like on your hilux ones.

Hypo is already runnin the biggest offset off the shelf im pretty sure in the rim department...............

As hypos rig is now setup he would in the front have as much as a coil 5link Gq axle setup in wheel travel (y change wats workin a treat ) .......

I dont think that there is any other leaf front rig on this board that has the amount of travel that hypo currently has ( he has dun alot of R&D in this department in the short time he has had this rig .........And yet he is still fine tunin day by day ................

Although this is hypos response thread im also pretty sure he has only gone down this road of gq axles for strength reasons not soley to coil the rear let alone the front ;) ....................

He,s gotta keep up with A1 some how hey HYPO :finger:

If you keep the springs in the same position (chassis wise - not outboard) , you might want to think about some form of track bar or the like to prevent axle wrap in the front - the front perches will be a bit tall due to the drivers side pumpkin.

if i were goin to all that trouble of changin complete diffs... i wood go a pair of GU diffs as they are alot stronger then the GQ diffs especially the cvs as they dont have the sides of the cv machined flat to allow for the kin pins

yeah thanx 4 the responses dudes..

i gunna out board the chassis mount and use the top of the radius arm brackets on the front housing as my perches its way easy then all i gotta do is brace the old mounts and ill have some beefy spring perchs coz the prob is if i inboard the mounts on the diff 2 fit the mounts on my chassis i will only b able 2 get 1 ubolt on the drivers side as the inside of the spring will b over the pumpkin...

and i just gunna go leafs in the rear ATM, i dont have massive flex in the rear (yet) but i works a treat on the trail and i havent not driven sumthing due 2 lack of flex its mormally lack of power or nerves.

and thanx 4 the  comments bout my rig A1 u know that i could run zuk axles and still put it all over u :finger: ...
