Advice on 4WD up to $10,000

Post by ca18escort »

Hi Guys,
I have just joined the forum on some advice from the guys at PF. I am looking at buying a new 4WD but I am looking for some advice on what would be best. Basically:

Has to be either a tray back or styleside so that I can cart the bike around.

Love for it to be an extra cab/ Club cab setup

Will be doing moderate off roading but nothing too extreme. I am happy to fit lockers to it to give me that little bit extra.

Last but not least, it will also be my daily driver so nothing too outlandish and the newer the better so A/C and Power steering is a real bonus for when me and the missus go camping.

Thanks guys.

I reckon you want a Rodeo or Navara.

A quick search in the trading post netted me these few. I agree with chimpboy, a rodeo or navara sounds like it suits you best, more comfortable onroad for the DD duties, and can be modded to fit 33z easy, lockers and you'd be sweet.

#1 "Holden Rodeo 1993 DLX Spacecab ute 4 x 4 turbo diesel, alloy tray, air conditioning, power steering, big new wheels, rego until 8/9/2004, factory condition, must see, $9700, MOUNT PRITCHARD"

#2 "HOLDEN RODEO 4WD Dual cab, power steering, air conditioning, $9995, Call now for no deposit finance. DL-17222. 318 Parramatta Road HOMEBUSH WEST "

#3 "Holden Rodeo dual cab ute 1993, bull-bar, long range tank, 31in tyres, registered 7/2004, very reliable, $9900 negotiable, INGLEBURN "

#4 "HOLDEN RODEO LS Space Cab 4 x 4, 1995, 2.6 Hi Torque, 5 speed manual, air, steer, luxury interior, good service history, 241000 mainly country kms, looks and drives like much less, 6/2004 rego, $9950. DL15853 Wayne Elven WINDSOR"

#5 "Nissan Navara 1991 4WD King Cab, 2.4 5 speed, power steer, air, bull-bar, towbar, $10990. DL-16118, Bob Calton Motors BROADMEADOW"

#6 "NISSAN NAVARA KING
Cab 1991 4x4 ute, white manual, steer, air, long rego, towbar, bull-bar, $10990, DL-16316, Highland Motors COOMA"

#7 "Hilux 1988 2.4 turbo diesel, lifted, with other extras, engineer's certificate, excellent condition, $9500, BARNSLEY"

#8 " Hilux V8 Windsor 1987 utility, Sunraysias, bull-bar, side-bars, CD, UHF, 6in lift, twin gas tanks, snorkel, bucket seats, 2/2004 rego, $9500 or near offer WEST WYALONG"

#9 "TOYOTA HILUX 1985 Manual, 210000kms, air, raised suspension, new Goodrich tyres, excellent condition, only 2 owners, $7990, The Van Shop, 1 Parramatta Road HABERFIELD"

#10 " Toyota Hilux 1987 4WD dual cab 2.4 diesel, lift kit, flares, bullbar, towbar, rollbars, bodies, long rego, immaculate throughout, $7200, GUILDFORD"

As you can see the hilux's are quite a bit older in most cases here, they seem to hold their value a bit better than the others, but have higher k's and don't seem to be in as good nick. But anyway, each to his own i guess. HTH

Seen Rodeo 3.5 V6 dual cabs for about the price you're looking for heaps of times..... even 1997 models for around $11k.

Likewise finding early 90's Navara dual cabs for about 8-10k ain't that hard either.

The Navara is tougher but the Isuzu/Rodeo has a heaps more powerful engine.

Seriously... the Hiluxes are way overpriced in this market.

If you really wanted a hilux, buy a 4runner and take the fibreglass off.

If you want to turn the 4by into an offroad beast you'd buy a GQ Ute anyway...... and it'd still be heaps cheaper than a similar model hilux....

Hiluxes hare reached the point in their evolution where their resale prices will make them an option only for those who think having a toyota badge is the most important thing in the world.

Hilux/Toyota "unbreakable" reliability is based on a perception from 30 years ago when jap cars were reliable and aussie cars weren't... a triton, navara or even a mazda bravo is every bit as reliable at a fraction of the price.

dude, if you come up with 11,500 , you could buy my beast. Its in the for sale section, fj45 1983 tray back. Theres power steering , but as far as air con goes,i just open the windows !!.

I dont recommend the navara s , youll bottem it out going over a speed bump at the local supermarket...

Just my opinion.... shane.

Well I saw several Navara's and Hiluxes (current models) that were being repaired where the Jabber was. They had their bodies removed so you could have a really good look at the running gear.
Most of the damage was from bent/twisted chassis and they were put on a rack to be straightened.
The Toyota unbreakable myth is absolute garbage the Navara is stronger and beefier, the front diff size of the IFS Hilux is an absolute joke and the chassis is nowhere near as strong.
Toyota have really sucked the public in with that one.....................
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

I notice that not too many people have mentioned a Triton, why is that?? As for the Hilux's I have allready owned 2 V8's But I am looking for something a little more refined the red one had a 308 and the green one had a 4.4 leyland engine. The green one had a 2" lift and a set of 33 muds on it too before I sold it. The thing is I really don't want a dual cab and there is what the majority of Rodeo's and Navara's are.

If your already had 2 trucks, just get out and test drive as many cars as you like and make your own personal decision.

My mates saw one catch fire up the beach a couple of days ago slogging through the soft sand

The advice above is all good, just go out and drive every single cab thing with a t-case you see in your price range and pick one ;)

The generation of commercial utes you're lookin at are all VERY similar in reality with the biggest differences in engine or suspension (or price for a toyota  )
