Advice on 4WD up to $10,000
Hi Guys,
I have just joined the forum on some advice from the guys at PF. I am looking at buying a new 4WD but I am looking for some advice on what would be best. Basically:
Has to be either a tray back or styleside so that I can cart the bike around.
Love for it to be an extra cab/ Club cab setup
Will be doing moderate off roading but nothing too extreme. I am happy to fit lockers to it to give me that little bit extra.
Last but not least, it will also be my daily driver so nothing too outlandish and the newer the better so A/C and Power steering is a real bonus for when me and the missus go camping.

A quick search in the trading post netted me these few. I agree with chimpboy, a rodeo or navara sounds like it suits you best, more comfortable onroad for the DD duties, and can be modded to fit 33z easy, lockers and you'd be sweet.

As you can see the hilux's are quite a bit older in most cases here, they seem to hold their value a bit better than the others, but have higher k's and don't seem to be in as good nick. But anyway, each to his own i guess. HTH

Seen Rodeo 3.5 V6 dual cabs for about the price you're looking for heaps of times..... even 1997 models for around $11k.
Likewise finding early 90's Navara dual cabs for about 8-10k ain't that hard either.
The Navara is tougher but the Isuzu/Rodeo has a heaps more powerful engine.
Seriously... the Hiluxes are way overpriced in this market.
If you really wanted a hilux, buy a 4runner and take the fibreglass off.
If you want to turn the 4by into an offroad beast you'd buy a GQ Ute anyway...... and it'd still be heaps cheaper than a similar model hilux....
Hiluxes hare reached the point in their evolution where their resale prices will make them an option only for those who think having a toyota badge is the most important thing in the world.
Hilux/Toyota "unbreakable" reliability is based on a perception from 30 years ago when jap cars were reliable and aussie cars weren't... a triton, navara or even a mazda bravo is every bit as reliable at a fraction of the price.
dude, if you come up with 11,500 , you could buy my beast.Its in the for sale section, fj45 1983 tray back. Theres power steering , but as far as air con goes,i just open the windows !!.
I dont recommend the navara s , youll bottem it out going over a speed bump at the local supermarket...

just say you get a toyota and you`ve already found this site youve probably cought the 4B bug.There are heaps of after market products for hiluxs and heaps of spares at the wreckers.

Had a 1990 Rodeo 2wd, that was FLOGGED mercilessly around aussie many times towing upto 5 road racebikes on ute and trailers, and full kit, tools, etc .... Fucking magic, never had a problem EVER....

Well I saw several Navara's and Hiluxes (current models) that were being repaired where the Jabber was. They had their bodies removed so you could have a really good look at the running gear.
Most of the damage was from bent/twisted chassis and they were put on a rack to be straightened.
The Toyota unbreakable myth is absolute garbage the Navara is stronger and beefier, the front diff size of the IFS Hilux is an absolute joke and the chassis is nowhere near as strong.
Toyota have really sucked the public in with that one.....................

I notice that not too many people have mentioned a Triton, why is that?? As for the Hilux's I have allready owned 2 V8's But I am looking for something a little more refined the red one had a 308 and the green one had a 4.4 leyland engine. The green one had a 2" lift and a set of 33 muds on it too before I sold it. The thing is I really don't want a dual cab and there is what the majority of Rodeo's and Navara's are.
If your already had 2 trucks, just get out and test drive as many cars as you like and make your own personal decision.

The advice above is all good, just go out and drive every single cab thing with a t-case you see in your price range and pick one

The generation of commercial utes you're lookin at are all VERY similar in reality with the biggest differences in engine or suspension (or price for a toyota
