Width of Tyres

I have searched but can't find what I'm looking for.

I'm looking at a set of 36 x 15.50 x 15LT or 35 x 12.50 x 15LT Radial Claws.

I'm wondering what peoples experiance is with wider tyres ?

I have the room to fit them, Rims dont matter as I will be buying a new set when I fit them up.

It there any better traction or stability on these or is it just look factor ?

It going a GQ ute twin locked.

Any help or opinions would be appreciated.

obviously with a wider tyre, its going to have a wider footprint, so traction will be increased. it will also stick out wider thus givingmore stability. it also looks cool :armsup:

Dont know about ol sydney town, but down in vic you wouldnt fit in the ruts with the 15's, causing all kinds of issues.
Would look cool though and be good for rocks ;)

yeah I run 15's in both Claws and MTZ's....
Love the way the wedge into the ruts and wind your way up the hills like a rack and pinion.......
still wouldn't swap them on my GQ though....love the Simex's to much ;)

I had though about Simex for it but didn't know how they would go on rock. What are they like ?

simex insanley good on rock, this is back to back testing same track vs cooper stt, bfg at and baja claws !! all on same section, so good infact im sellin mine to get em Im over hal assed tyres.

Serious? Have you tried them on smooth rock though? I find thats what stuffs them. If there is mechanical grip though, then they're awesome.

that i haven't lol, as a rule i hate rock but myself and my mate have twin patrols. every mod is the same right to turbo etc and no matter what we drive on ill spin and slide he can drive it. Now it does make him bored but when i have gone off into a ditch he never even come close..mud clay rock always heaps easier and its because of the mechanical traction. But smooth rock ill happily admit we haven't done enough off to say what the diff really is.

does anyone notice when going to a very wide tyre, although the paw print is wider, it becomes shorter because the pressure patch is spread over a wider, but shorter distance.
so contact remains relatively similar. ( in theory on solid flat stuff anyway)
so what i was starting with, is does anyone feels the tyres floats more and gives less traction on some surfaces because of the amount of width the tractive force is spread over.

i run a 315/75R16 cooper st for play stuff, and then run daily 31's because of the amount of driving i do.

ive been through a few sets of daily 31s (cheap second handers)
and what i found when running 31x10.5 they had heaps of tread, but got stuck in places i would drive through in 2wd on the coopers (on acreage)
ended up blowing one of those out, and decided i was better off finding something else.
came up with a set of split rims, 235/75R16 goodride CR357 i think from memory (quite aggressive, and theres no way the tread is 235, ill measure it tomorrow i think), and duelers in 7.5R16.
these tyres were great, and with the duelers on the rear it drove straight through places i got bogged with the crap 31x10.5s
ended up swapping the good rides to the rear, coz they were understeering like pricks on wet bitchumen, and they are just as good.

so i was wondering, does going too wide sometimes have a negative effect?

as from that story you would have gleaned that i have better traction on a skinny than i did on a 10.5.
the skinny just cuts in and grips on through, the 10.5 just sat on top and dug holes....

Some tracks have very tight deep ruts, even with 35x12.5 it gets tight.
With the 15's you could end up with mud getting pushed into the bead.
Unless you run beadlocks ;)

I run simex in a 10.5 and find them very good on rock, even on smooth wet muddy rock.

i know how ridiculous it sounds, but the 10.5 were the old desert dueler 'S' pattern with plenty of tread.
vs the modern 692 dueler which looks more like a highway terrain than alot of highway tyres...
i wondered if its why alot of people run the 10.5 simex rather than a 12.5?

The Skinny tire theroy isn't as silly as it sounds, but it depends on what sort of mud and slipery stuff your dealing with. most forby tracks are only slipery on the very top but sill relitivley hard compound. on this sortof situation the wider the better as you rely purley on the ammount of earth you can grab with the lugs. If the ground is soft however or the mud layer is a bit thicker, such as it would be on acerage not abused by hundred of cars the skinney tires have the ability to cut down to the good grip underneath. a wide tyre would not have the ground pressure and would simply fill the lugs with mud and result on the tyre spinning on top. :cool: .

i learnt this because one of our hilux had pencil tyres on it and we replaced them with 35" muddies and i discovered that there where some areas where the skinnys actualy griped better.

however i must offer a disclamier and state that most of the time the wider tire prevails and hence our hilux still has the 35s. It is also worth noting that the wider tyre disadvantage can be over come by selecting a higher gear and a carpet touching accelerator position allowing the mud to clear itself so the lugs on the wide tyre can also dig down to good traction.

Big hp will clear a wider tyre where as low hp will suit a narrow tyre that can cut through. But there are always exceptions.
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
