93 Disco Battery Dash Light?

Post by sickgm »

Hey Guys,

Just a quick one, I am new to disco's and was wondering what the battery light on the dash means? Is it simply a battery issue?

When driving and I switch on my high beams or indicator the battery light looks (Very faintly) like it wants to come on????

Could also mean you battery is farked and cant keep up with the discharge, get it checked before you fork out for a new alt.

It also could mean simply that the earth circuit between the battery and alternator has a bad connection.
I suggest you clean the earths between the battery and body and body and engine.
I had to run a new one between the battery and alternator direct once to get rid of the faint glow. To see if that is it, just run a jumper from the battery -ve to the alternator itself, as sometimes it is the aternator bolts to the bracket going high resistance.

Well now that I had a closer look, the battery that is fitted is one with the indicator light. Green = good, black = no good. That is currently showing black.

So, can I assume that the battery is stuffed?

I would say that is your problem.Throw in a decent sized battery and you should be right.

Well maybe.
If the battery is not taking charge there could be a high resistance between the alternator and battery, but ideally even if the battery is stuffed the light should not glow, as the light measures the difference in voltage between the battery and alternator, and there should not be a difference if all the connections are good.
Black could mean the battery is not fully charged, which could also be a bad connection somewhere.
Anyway good luck.
