Change diff center after fitting 35"

Hi guys,

I am looking to change the diff center. Just couple questions:

1. What ratio of diff center is available? 4.3, 4.5, 4.8 ?
2. How much do they cost around?
3. Where can I get them in Melbourne area?
4. Do I need to get the front diff as well?

hi mate

you can get factory 3.9 4.1 4.3 4.6 and 4.8's you can get also.

if you had 3.9's go 4.3's after fitting 35's
if you had 4.1 go 4.6
if you had 4.3's you need 4.8's

cost, varied at the moment, shop around :)

4. - front and rear.... if you have different, they will rotate at different speed.

Mine is a 1993 4.2 GQ II Diesel

Does anyone know what the original ratio is?

If I get an aftermarket diff, will they be as strong as the original one?

It will tell you what ratio you have on the plate under the bonnet mate cant remember the code now but mine had something like HG39 on it meaning 3.9 it's a auto and that it what they usually have manuals have 4.1 most of the time.
Sold the patrol just web wheelin now.

more than likely 4.1
and no aftermarket ratio's will not be as good as OEM ones.
but thats not saying all the aftermarket ones are NOGOOD, cause after all, its not nissan that makes the gearsets, its a " aftermarket" company that makes them.

Assuming it is 4.1 ratio:
Also depends a little if you wanna change your rev range. If you want to be cruising at 100 klicks in 5th at 1900-2000rpm (4.66) or at 2300-2400rpm (4.8)


Going from a 4.1 ratio to 4.66, running 35" BFG Muds, when the speedo shows 100 kph, the GPS shows 96.

Going from a 4.1 ratio to 4.66, running 37" wranglers, when the speedo shows 100 kph, the GPS shows 102.

yes 4.3 came out in the gq 3.0 litre petrols
4.6 came out in the gq 2.8 diesels.

you need 4.6's if you had 4.1's

Thank you! I can get my hands on a MQ 2.8 turbo ute, would they work? Or do i have to find a 2.8 GQ?

Wouldn't that would mean you would have to run 35's permanently?

Just use radial 35's for wheelin, then you don't hafta worry about swappin them back for highway use.
I don't see the sense in having 2 sets of tyres.
6" GQ, 37" Treps, that is all.....

you have 2 sets of rubber so you dont wear out 80% of the rubber on road and are left with 20% when you go wheeling
