ateco warn challenge - rnd 3 engel

Post by 60 mad »

Today was good except for the waiting but you get that. Sharpy gave the rock garden a good go, clint reed tried doing the impossible on ss8 and broke the car winched all the way to the finish gate, adam o'brien broke the winch in the rock garden, brett chenowth rolled, racegq had problems so dnf, scott mcgill is doing well as usual.

Some sorry looking rigs by the end of the day but most still running ready for sunday. :D

ok guys I spent a bit of the day there today and was very boring.
It takes ages to see some action spent too much time hanging around waiting for the next rig.
Anyway I did see Trent leen roll over on one of the straights, I think he was going too fast as he came to teh corner, but they did self recover so are still in the running.
From what i heard huddy was leading in the farm truck. ( Go carby class) apperently he had the fastest time on friday night stages.
There was a few nice rigs but the talent driving wasnt that impressive, i was very bored most of the time as there was very soft driving and lots of winching going on.
If you want advice dont bother going Sunday

I was a little disapointed, I have been a few times over the last 10 years and it was probably the worst I have seen.

The trucks and stages were good, waiting goes with the type of event due to failures, DNFs etc and that didn't worry me BUT.

This competition is a lawsuit waiting to happen and I would have thought from previous legal issues, it would have been better, not worse.

I can't understand why we couldn't park in the paddock like we have previously instead of 2km from the stages(it was probably due to morons getting stuck though) , the transport was a joke, a circuiting small bus instead of the landrovers would have been much better. We ended up walking both ways because there was no transport when we needed it.

There was not marked spectator areas or access to viewing areas so people were just walking up and down stages with race trucks flying past at less than a couple of metres distance when the people scattered off the track. Two years ago when I went, it was not perfect but better with viewing areas and marked safe access to them.

The people on the quad bikes were down right dangerous with no regard to pedestrians anywhere and it appeared you could just bring your own and hoon around on them.

If they want spectators at these events (do they? im not sure from yesterday) they need to cater much better for them. If I was a sponsor, I would have been very disapointed.

Before somebody says, If you don't like it, organise it yourself (common theme here) I will never be a competitior or involved in organising the event, Just like going to the world series cricket or the AFL football, I just pay my money and go to watch, and want to get value for this money, and come home safe. I only go to support mates competing.

Ouch :bad-words: That sounds very nasty Pete. Not a common way to bow out of an event :?

This will be good for the sport and the Engel Series. Hopefully Bidders & Joe or Ads & Bagsy can push for them podium places

I spent the whole day there yesterday but obviously saw it from a different perspective as i was amongst the trucks and drivers, so for me it appeared fine.

However i think if you want to spectate Sunday is the day to go, all 3 stages are close to each other, if you want to watch cars driving and not winching then go to a safari or rally, last i heard the comp was called a The Ateco WINCH Challenge not the Ateco DRIVE Challenge. After speaking to Smithy, Sunday is going to be 1 winch after the other the stages are not fully drivable so that is what you should expect.

On a lighter note it was a shame to hear you were out so quickly Pete not good, and it was good to catch up with Moose and others i havent seen for a long time.
Joe.

I think they all need to put abit more thought into how they do sponsership advertising. I know from a Marshalls point of view it is a pain to have to worry about so we dont do a good job (regards banners). But someone needs to take charge of how they do the advertising on stages to do a better job. I have heard storys from the OBC that it was an issue there also.

really needs someone with a photographers eye for a stage to set there location. So as then they are in the money shots/footage.

This is common at all comps, rock crawling, winch challenges, all terrain events they all have the same issue unless they have used the exact courses before.

Ateco was Great.

Post by Kieran »

We had a great day on Sunday as spectators.............

Yes, you had to walk, Yes, sometimes it was hard to see and Yes, sometimes there were hold ups.

BUT !!!! What great SS's for the drivers and spectators alike, what great winching and full noise driving, what a bargain, for 15 measly bucks, we got to watch some of the best cars in the country, piloted by the most insane guys & girls around......

We had a great time, thanks to all volunteers, we'll be back next year.....

Kieran & Amanda.......................

PS. we got the bus back up to the carpark.

Excellent competition, I thought the location of the Sunday stages was excellent, much closer to parking with a better view of the stages, while waiting to compete I took a look from the top and the bottom and thought the action was great. Having seen the effort some of the more standard 4x4's had getting out of the paddock at the end of the day I think it was very wise to keep the spectator vehicles at the top of the hill.
Thanks to all the Marshals and event organisers, Neil Cooper fora great job with the tracks as always.

Cheers
