4runner gearbox probs

a mate has a 92 2.8 diesel 4runner, manual 5spd. about 6 months ago he had it rebuilt due to losing 5th gear. a cpl of weeks ago he had a problem where the box seemed to be stuck in gear, so while he was overseas i took it to his mech for him who said it was prob stuck in 2gears. now, a few days ago his mech called him up and said that it was infact stuck in 2 gears as the selector fork had fallen down, he also said that the same thing had happened to him when he had rebuilt it and then took it for a test drive. what i want to know is, is this something that can just happen on its own(in my head i cant work out how it could), or is this the fault of the person who put the box back together screwing something up??

with gearbox the theory shit happens can appear quite easily

For the theory part if it's stuck in 2 gears it won't drive it'll lock up because of the 2 diffrent ratios trying to turn the one output shaft. i'd say it's been in whatever gear and the selector part of the stick has come out of it's gate so to speak. My transfer case does it all the time it's a simpler setup easier to fix. Take it back to who done the box something hasn't been adjusted properly.

yeah i know it wont drive, i had to get the bastard to the mechanics.


the shit happens theory is a crock. there is always a reason for something to happen, whether its just coz wear and tear has gotten to it, or poor workmanship, or it got dropped on a rock and punched a hole thru it... i am certain it cant be wear and tear as its a rebuilt box... thats why im leaning towards workmanship. i just need someone who knows gearboxes better than i to tell me what he woulda cocked up for this to happen... he doesnt have apprentices so it wasnt them

Is it stuck in one gear and you can drive it in that gear or did you have to put it the transfer case into neatural to get it towed like i said above i'd say where the stick selects it's shift rod has become miss alinged.

it wont drive.... meaning the transfer needs to be in neutral for it to move... no drive

Yeah it deffently sounds like it's in 2 gears the "theory" side of this says it can't happen as they have interlock pins as soon as one shify rod is moved it goes into a groove in the other to lock it where it is the only way it can select 2 at the same time is if this pin has been left out

yep thats basically as i understood it... just needed more than my own thoughts to assist him.

my mate asked the mech who has the car atm to give him a quote on it, and when he called in to get the quote the vehicle was on the hoist with a new box half in... he was never given permission to perform that work on it, he was only asked for a quote....
