extinguisher bottle as an air tank... how do i set it up?

how hard is it gonna be to set up a 8kg fire extinguisher bottle as an air resivoir on my truck as now have a extinguisher bottle and what am i gonna need to set it up right the first time??? i wanna set it up for my air locker... pumpin up tyres and maybe even using a rattle gun or air gun..... my only problem at the moment is tryin to get it onto the plane at melbourne air port to take it back to TOWNSVILLE now :roll:

throw it in the bin, and buy a proper air tank with all fittings and pressure relief valve.. $20-50 depending on size of tank.

I did this for mine, It was dead easy, bunch of fittings from the air tool shop inc a nice little 5 way manifold.
I used the ARB pressure switch but there are others available.
1 x pressure switch
1 x Front Air locker solenoid
1 x Air in from pump with check valve
1 x Air out for tyres/etc with tap
1 x spare (blanked)

Drill and tap a drain hole in the lowest part (depending on your mounting) of your tank and fit a tap to that.

All sweet!

Oh yeah, good idea to drill and tap a pressure relief valve too! (hmm must do that)

tell me bogged whats wrong with an extinguisher? it is strong hard to dint and damage and was made to take and hold high pressure.... and above all FREE.... :finger:

and i recon if i had to buy an air tank then set it up it wood cost a hell of alot more then 20-50 bucks :roll:

You still have to buy the relief valves and shit, and will cost you more than $20... Your money.

Also not all hold high pressure. some are chemical reactions that make them work.

i have aquired a cast fire extinguisher bottle as it was a high pressure CARBON DIOXIDE extinguisher (just like a divers air tank but smaller)

You still have to buy the relief valves and shit, and will cost you more than $20... Your money.

Also not all hold high pressure. some are chemical reactions that make them work.

They are a bit thin but you could put the pressure relief valve outside on the line out of the tank and you could feed a pickup line down into the lowest part of the tank so it would draw the water out and then put a separator on the line .... or you could go to a truck wreckers and find one off of a kenworth prime mover and it would have most of the bits you need. Drilling and tapping threads is a bit too much like hard work for me

its brand new (BLING BLING) RED

and its got a 22mm wall thickness so it very strong.... recon it wood hurt abit if i hit some one over the head with it

This is an easy one, paint the bottle black and fit a medical oxygen mask to it, tell the airline you have a collapsed lung and will die without it and you will be sweet.
For extra points hire a wheelchair and you may get upgraded to business class

And when you get there throw the bottle (BOMB) in the bin and get the right stuff!

i enqiured a while ago but any WORMALD extingiusher place will sell em too ya but they are that cheap ..... ask for the carbon dioxide bottle as they are stronger then the others

I have to ask. Why mod something that is not specifically made for the job, when you can purchase it off the shelf reasonably cheap ? (Ie at a truck wrecker)

1. no truck wreckers here within 400km
2. newy's were pretty dear. fire ex was free.
3. Was a total walk in the park to get to work in fact the only addtional fitting (over and above what I would've had to get whichever way I went) were the drain tap and an adapter down to 1/4 BSP

yep they're way overkill in pressure capacity and this is bad because??? (did I mention it was free?)

The only issue I would have is that for the amount of space they take up they have a slightly reduced capacity compared to their steel equivalent. If I was really concerned about this I guess I'd get a pressure switch set to a higher PSI mebee 200 or so (my tank should be good to about 1500 PSI) and then use a regulator for the airlocker line. That'd be an even better solution than a truck tank.

With a 22mm wall thickness and being cast this thing must be real light :roll:

My air tank is about a foot of plain old 100mmx8mm pipe with 6mm plates welded to the top and bottom. Tapped 2 fittings in the top a drain in the bottom and it stands up on its end.

how big is this cylinder Jake? have you got endless or a clisby compressor? the little compressors 9ARB, blue tongue, big red etc) will take forever to air up a decent sized tank, it can exceed the acceptable duty cycle of the compressor and lead to early compressor failure. (even 'continuous' rated compressors are only rated for continuous use up to 50 PSI, they start getting nice and warm when run for a long time at higher pressures.

A 1kg fire extinguisher is about the size of a 1.25 litre bottle of coke, so an 8kg extinguisher like you have must be quite a bit larger (about 8 times larger I would guess :roll:

).

Now given the size of it and the fact it has 22mm wall - it must weigh heaps more than 2 kg

I agree with JAKE, a fire extinguisher bottle is a great idea and cheap and ezy enough to come across. U all say that its not designed for this use or that buy a proper air tank, well guys an extinguisher bottle IS an engineered and rated pressure vessel that is designed to withstand a lot higher pressures than a semi air tank or any off the shelf air tank, they are designed not only to hold the 240 psi of CO thats in them but also to withstand the excess in pressure build up from the heat of a fire which will increase this pressure even more.

And being an ex firey myself i know what their capable of.

GREAT idea Jake i might have to give it a go myself.

Not possible if it has a wall thickness of 22mm is an 8KG bottle and is cast. Even if its Cast Aluminium this size has to way more than 2KG.

Are you sure the wall thickness is not 2mm?

An extinguisher bottle will be fine to use as a holding tank. But you wont be running Air tools off it.
