Handheld UHF

The old man is going on a trip out to the Flinders and wants a UHF for a little added safety while on the road.

Looking for something that fits the following:

- 5W output
- handheld
- charge from cigarette socket (this is the bit I am struggling to find)

Looked at both GME and ICOM, but I don't think they can be charged from the car (looking for a similar method to a mobile phone). I have a GME but it uses the desktop base to charge in the car, which isn't really practical while on the move (OK for camping so suits us).

Any suggestions?

How about a Uniden that runs on AA's, then just have some rechargeable batteries.. not as nice.. but easy..

The icom desktop charger (BP232N) run on 12v supplied through an AC powerpack, this all comes with the radio. If you just get a cigarette lighter 12v plug and cable with the appropriate plug to go into the back of the desktop charger you'll be able to the charge the icom 41s in around 3 hrs for a good full 10-15hrs use. Icom have a suitable ciggarette lighter adapter designed for this purpose (CP17L). Alternatively you can use a AA battery pack in place of the rechargable battery. It holds 6x AA's and it's code is BP240.

The 41s is the only 5w handheld that i've used that has such a superior stable receiver that it doesn't really require an enternal antenna that GME's or the previous 40s require to get the same performance.

They're not Omdi's and its just a hobby of mine. I've been bringing them in and programming them for mates for a fair while now. I only make a few $$$ and that covers my programming time and postage. I've experimented with a lot of the many Chinese radios out there and these are the best in terms of features, performance and available accessories. They are comparable with Icom, GME etc in terms of construction quality and performance. Way better than a Uniden.............

I probably would have been pretty interested a couple of weeks ago, just bought a GME 2w hand held to talk car to car . No need for another one, now I just need an in car unit
