swapping to a smaller steering wheel - GQ

just wanting to swap from the bus-sized standard GQ steering wheel to something slightly smaller diameter. are there any easy swaps? i've heard pulsar steering wheels fit fairly easily?
88 td42 gq. 2" body & 3" OME, 36" beadlocked 'pedes, ARB winch bar mod'd for body lift, rear locker.....

I fitted an Autotecnica sports steering wheel to my 89 GQ SWB about 8 years ago after the original started to fall apart. It's much smaller in diameter. still there and I still like it. The Boss that came with it made install easy and it even has a Nissan logo in the middle. Try Repco, Supercheap or Autopro and I am sure you will find one.

Pulsar wheels are a direct swap! there are also a few diffrent styles to choose from.

Go the pulsar wheel. They arn't as small as most of the aftermartek stuff. But if you have ever used an aftermarket wheel, I think they are just to small.
I have been using a steering wheel out of eiter a N13 or N14 SSS Pulsar for the last 4 years and it has been fantastic. Also they can be had in good nick from the wreckers fo around $60. As opposed to the some of the stupid prices for a steering wheel that has a crap finish I have seen from autobahn etc.

Good question. Answer dunno for sure. But going by the fact that every other Nissan shares the same spline size. I would say yes.

Try a pick-a-part style yard and just change the thing in the driveway. There not hard to change. Just leave the steering wheel nut on a couple of turns until you have lossend the steering wheel of the splines (they must be some form of tapered spline/shaft).
Once the wheel is loose take nut off then take wheel off.

Oh and before fitting new steering wheel, remove the horn fuse. As the Pulsar must earth differently to a 91Shorty.

I had issues with the horn working on the current shorty (no issue at all on the previous one). Just had to loosen off the plastic shroud thing and push it forwards. Horn works fine now.

I got mine from Patrol-a-part in melb $60 I've been told by a mate that it's from a older maxima easy as to fit no need for a boss kit ether, be aware that even when you think the wheel is straight it's prob not. Dose get a few funny looks when pulling stearing wheel off at the lights tring to ajust it

Mate just be aware that by going to a smaller steering wheel, that you can void your insurance and make your vehicle unroadworthy or registerable in some states as going to a smaller wheel by more than an allowable amount does not keep inline with some states Department of Transport limits. I think it comes down to the original specs from the ADR guidelines that the vehicle manufacturers go by.

For example I think in QLD you can't go more than something like 20mm from original size. In saying that you would have to be pretty unlucky to be pinged for it. Another cheap steering wheel type to try and pick up if pulsar wheels are too hard to find is the Nissan Micra.

I had a mate with a Micra who for some reason wanted an N14 Pulsar wheel so gave me the Micra wheel as it has the same spline as the Pulsar and Patrol, etc. Everything bolted on and works fine. Very happy and mush better than the old fall apart patrol wheel!
