transfer case noise

transfer case noise
I have a toyota gear driven transfer case like in 75series ,60series etc
I have a growling noise that comes from the transfer case when in H2 when between 1200 and 2000 rpm then after 2000 it goes away it does not matter which gear I am in
I have only just got the truck going and i donot know if this is normal
there are no other trucks here to compare
I had a mate who has a 75 seem to remember his truck did it to
will a heavier oil stop it? because it sounds like the gears chattering

Thats a bit better....PeterInSa wrote:When you change your oil put some Nulon Additive in as well. I use Nulon for Engine, Gearbox, Transfer case and Diffs.
If Nulon does not mask it ,I think your box is on the way out.

the transfer has just had all new bearings and seals and gears were replaced that looked worn if the case was stuffed woudn't I have backlash and be noisy at all engine revs
I was thinking maybe using 85w 140 have you heard of anybody using this before
but you are right first things first ill put 80/90 with nulon insated of the 75
those penrite manuals must be wrong they specified 75
i have front and rear arb airlockers and i run 90/140 in them
all the oils have only been in the car 4 weeks
the other odd thing is i am using a 5 puck brass button solid centre clutch i am wondering if this is transmitting a resonant frequency through the driveline from the engine when it is laboring
if i were driving in australia I would hardly notice the noise because the time spent in that rev range is minamal(1200- 2000) rpm below 40 kph

How do you know its the Tbox. Thought I had a noise underneath and son who has a repair shop in Adelaide put the vehicle on heavy duty jacks on his 4 poster and his business partner drove the vehicle at over 80kph with the bloody wheels turning, the LC 6' off the ground and he got under the vehicle with a sethscope and cheched for diff, drive shaft, Tbox and gear box noises.
I could not watch.
Another possible cause: Your Drive shaft could be out of balance

yeh sounds pretty dangerous
the thought crossed my mind but it will only make the noise when loaded at low eng rpm
its got a brand new drive shaft new uni's and balanced and there is no vibration or noise if you select a diferent gear to change eng rpm keeping the same speed and rate of acceleration
the reason i thought i sounded like transfer i that it sounds like rattling gears chattering growling it is a very diferent noise to pinging.
It happens at that low revs while the eng is laboring below 50 kph in fifth about 40kph 4th 30 in third 20 in second and about 10-15 in first under mid to light throttle if you avoid those speeds in those gears everything is tight and quiet
thanks
