Gearbox woes.....but hey these things happen

Post by Dalluke »

Hey guys,
Just sent the paj into the gearbox place to get a noise in 5th looked at, under 2nd hand car warranty i thought take it in before it completly fails. Ended up being quite serious, over $2000 of repairs to gearbox and clutch, warranty covered $900 for gearbox, so i up for $1100 ish, wish they would pay more....

Diagnosis, (laymans)
2 bearings gone in gearbox full recon needed, needed new rear seal (Slow oil leak), new clutch plate, machined flywheel, some other bearings and new gearbox oil!

Fun Fun Fun, thats the first major repair so far.... so warrantys are good but sometimes you wonder if its better to let it fail then take it in cause the warranty guys pay for labour and all failed parts but none of the 'worn' ones hehehe.

just gotta keep smiling! btw the guys down at global transmissions in blacktown are awesome getting it done quick and ready for my trip on saturday!!!

You're lucky they came to the party at all. Most of those warranties aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

The bearings went in my gearbox about 3 months after i bought it and they wouldn't come to party, saying it was wear and tear. Lucky i'm a mechanic with access to a hoist so all labour was free. Still cost me 1k to have the bearings done though. I replaced the clutch as well. I also replaced the rear main oil seal while i was in there with an aftermarket one. Had the gearbox out 6 months later to put a genuine one in and haven't had a leak since.

Yes I definitely know the feeling of having your gearbox fail on you... Last time it happened, I was in Cocklebiddy on the Nullarbor Plain. We waited 11 hours for a tow truck, then waited a week for a replacement gearbox to be fitted in Kalgoorlie (almost as bad as the one that come out), and then a few weeks later I had had enough of the gearbox problems my old NA was giving me (3rd gearbox in 4 years) so I got rid of it!
