I run 31x12.5 on -23 offset rims. My tyres currently stick outside my guards 5cm. Been driving around like that for a few months and haven't had any problems, had a female cop give me a smile and that's about it :P

youll find if you have a history of traffic infrigements and especially if you have those magic P's on the window youll get pulled over far more often for silly little things - when i was on my P's i got pulled over cos i, and i quote: "Went too fast through that roundabout" to which i explained "well, its a 60 zone and i went through at around 55... whats the problem"... "your tyres wont last very long if you do that" "ok" "here breathe into this"... lol

never been defected though, been checked over twice but they didnt know what they were looking for - and typically now its SPOA and on 31's but engineered i havent been pulled over at all... haha

I recently went through an RBT (Random Breath Test) site on the way home from a wheeling session here in VIC, where they also had a traffic cop checking cars for defects. My zook was covered in mud - inside and out.

Of course, the traffic cop came straight over to me and started looking around. I was running my 31x10.5 Bighorns on 15x8's.
With my Bunnings flares, the rubber is almost perfectly flush with the outside edge of the flare. He had a look down the side of the car and nodded saying "thats OK". Phew!!! :D

The only thing he had a go at me for was the fact I had no mud-flaps. He let me go with a warning but he made a huge deal about it.

I know it's a bit off topic, but the mud-flaps seem to be a bigger issue with the traffic cops than the tyre size. (Lets face it - Zooks look like the were made for 31's! )

Cheers,

Pez

Mudflaps are shit and look shit as well, mine are only on to stop the mud getting into the rear taillights as it keeps busting the bulbs, ive thought about cutting something and turning it into a mudspat/blocker to save the lights but when i figure out something they are gooooooone :)

also attracted no attention, just chuck on a set of 31's!

thats what im thinking, just keep my 31's and save up and get 235s for road. ive got bunnings flares too lol 40mm garden edging but my 31's sit half an inch inside the flares!!!! so they're well covered.

like when i look at my sierra - it looks normal as though the 31s came standard, it doesnt look like ive gone overboard with tyre size, yes they're chunky and agressive on chromies but they look normal - i think anyway.

does anybody no the penalty for being pinned by the 5 - 0

how many points? fine?

Not all states are the same in relation to this. I don't believe there are fines or points in Vic, but I believe there are in QLD, as an example.

Coverage and mudflaps are the easy targets.

Run big enough flares and mudflaps on the road and you'll be much less visible, regardless of tyre size.

Mudflaps/flares are less ghay than a defect notice.

If you rip them off all the time, make them removable when you're in the bush or hook them up out the way.
It's not that hard.

I was up the snow on the weekend and I didn't see one GQ (of 237465837456738 billion) with mudflaps on it. If the cops were out and about looking for defects like they do on the Queens birthday weekend, there'd be lots of cars with canaries on the windscreen now.

i got done in a transport dept stop at wamuran qld outside of the school (be carefull going thru there as i have seen transport dept there about half a dozen times since. it was about a year ago a i recieved a self clearance defect, no fine for 31x10.5 and extended shackles, i have 75mm flexy flare so my tyres are in line with the flares and he said that part was fine.

i have been told since that these self clearance defects dont exist anymore and that i was lucky to only get one of those in the first place.

Hahaha that was you! Small world hey, specially cause i only read your build up thread like a day before that too.

Yeh, it was a $75 fine and 1 point i believe, 50mm rolling diameter too large. Their 235/75/15's. The cop had a look at the RUF Suspension setup though and I just played stupid and said I had no idea, he just said you might wanna get that checked out for you own interest haha. He was a picky bastard...

ROFL! my favourite was driving my old LJ50 soft top, windscreen removed, 31"s hanging 3"outside the guards, covered in mud, front bumper tossed into the back coz it got ripped off on a tree, and no mirrors (same tree).

Pulled into a breatho, blew into the thingy and drove off again.

Drove through town, and got waved past the other breatho on the other side of town

Took half an hour before the heart rate got back down to anything like normal :?

I got done for a defect having 30 by 9.5's muds on some sunnies. They stuck outside the guards about 20mm, so that was not good to start with. I only have a 2" spring lift, no other standout mods. It was clean at the time and i was driving well under the speed limit on a sunday afternoon. It didnt help that i live in Redcliffe, Northside brisbane and i am only 21. Its a $75 fine and 1 point and its a self clear defect. So i brought some new standard size tyres, same as placard, then got done for speeding the very next day. 75 in a 60, i didnt go near 70 so either the police car onboard speed camera was wrong, or my speedo is way out. Oh well, 6 months no wheeling.
zook comming soon......

I was running coilover suspension and 36" swampers with no mud flaps on my zook ute a few years back. Same deal as above.... Just a self clearance defect. No points, no fine. Just had to provide a RWC :D

I think the coppa was ready to go to town on me until I pointed out that one of his headlights was blown

if you do take the 3 month loss, inquire as to how it will effect you insurance now and in the future... might make you think twice ;)

Do you have insurance now? If so check with them to see how it will effect your premium and rating.

i run 31 x 10.5 mickey thompson baja claws.
the day transport pulled me over i was running late for an x-ray and was annoyed that id be even later.
they measure from the outer most point of my tyre (not the tread) and said that it was 90mm out from the guard.
i then got pined for:
oil leakage in rear left hub
broken rear lense
metel exposed in drivers seat
missing rear seat belts
my l.h.f seat belt didnt retract quick enough and 'sharp protrusions front and rear of vehicle' - i was running without my front bumper or rear side caps.
$220.00 fine.

i have extend shackles and it rides on 32x10.5's on 15x8 -24ET rims with no flare extensions so they are well outside the guards.... one day i was rolling down the road with nowhere else to sit but next to a traffic cop , who looks over and checks out the car, looks at me smiles and gives the thumbs up ! i smiled brightly and waved hahhahaha

Never had any problems being pulled over in the Zook, although the 235/75R15 MTR's do hang out the guards a little, but have been pulled over while riding a Honda Nifty 50 motor scooter :?

Cops stopped me, asked to see my license (car license only required), checked over the bike (stock standard as you'd imagine). Curiosity got the better of me and I asked if there was a reason they'd pulled me over. They said people had been doing motor transplants and shoe-horning 110cc 2-stroke engines into Nifty 50 frames
