i imagine that most early vitara ecu's are like GTi ecu's in that you can plug in an LED to see how many flashes it makes to give you a diagnostic reading

normal procedure would be to ground the diagnostic connector and then read trouble codes- consult the FSM.
Only very late vitaras would have a OBDII connector that would allow a generic code reader to be installed.
However, what problem are you trying to find? normally, you'll only get a code if a sensor isn't functioning at all, not if it's dying and giving the "wrong" signal.
