Pajero TDI,It appears the turbo has gone , whining. But it is also blowing large amounts of smoke, not diesel, if it where a petrol car I would say it had done the rings. IT is really excessive. Any ideas, if a diesel blows rings does it blow blue smoke or may be the turbo is leaking in to the exhaust.??????
What do you guys think.... worth fixing or should I just wreck the car.
I dont want to buy a turbo to find the motors shagged :-)

First thing to do is remove the air intake from the turbo to the engine and see how much oil is in there. If there is alot of oil then it is most likely your turbo. If not, the next thing to check would be the exhaust side of the turbo. Remove the engine pipe and run the car. Give it a few revs and see if any oils comes out. There probably the easiest things for you to check. But before making rash decisions and wrecking out the car there is always the option of seeking some professional advice from a reputable establishment!

Remove the intake pipe from the turbo and try to wiggle the compressor wheel with your fingers.
A lot of play means it's rooted.
Is the smoke blue or black? Blown turbos put oil into the exhaust and make heaps of blue smoke, black smoke means not enough air which could be a turbo related problem but not the turbo itself.
