Some VIT questions!
Some VIT questions!
Alright i have goten on to a 1992 manual 2 door vitara......
Has 4"suspension lift and 2"(Said the guy he brought it off said 4" but he said it's more like 2"!) body lift runnin 31's at the moment!
Reco engine 20,000 ago
New front diff
Extractors
All for $2500 but said make him an offer the wife wants it gone!
Now for some questions....
I have heard you can bolt vitara diff centers into vitaras can i bolt the lockers from my NT into the vit?
Is there any major things that go wrong with ths model?Any thing i should look out for?
With that lift could i fit my 32" swampers even if i have to grind the guards a bit?
Will i need redustion gears on 32's(Guesing i would! But he said it's good now on 31's....maybe it already has em!)
Just think the vit would be nice as it's a lot to easyer to chuck all the stuff in the back when headin camping instead of craming it all in with an esky on the out side of my rig.....(Has ute style soft top!)
Sorry bout all the questions but hey if i'm goin to QLD to get it ill definatly want to know sure it's what i'm after!

Ones i know are..
Cracked heads (IIRC something about porous casts that was resolved later???)
Flogged keyway on crankpulley = erratic timing
stuck open oil pressure relief valve = cronic low oil pressure
noisy valves = take it to someone who actually knows how to set them correctly.
With that much lift is should have some form of camber (and maybe caster) correction (steves the man for suspension, should be able to comment more)
EFI, check oxygen sensor, water temp sensor (the one for ecu not guage)
Alloy diff housing not the strongest. Also no redcution avaliable for high, only low but you may be able to go up in the diff ratio
otherwise try these

Cheers every one!lilzook wrote:hey suzukiboy. i'd probably wreck the vit. put the motor in your NT, sell off the tyres, susp etc.
Doubt it would go as well offroad as your sierra.
lilzook im over the mud and stuff that wrecked my sierra i just got it back on the road then the head went and i kept drivin it.....
I more just want something i can chuck the camping gear in with the esky and stuff....... and still with my 32" swampers and get some lockers the only thing different will be the independant front end and i'll look after this one........
Spike sierra to be hounust im not sure..... what ever the 92 manual had in it! The engine is only 20,000 old so the motor is still all good!

Theres pics of a green vitara in here.
Without a doubt its the best vitara I've seen.
Its twin locked and runs 33" Pedes.
Kym was unlucky and broke a LHF CV at the start of the day but still did everything in 3WD!

the above car, with lift and tyres is breaking a cv pretty much every outting. this time was a little sooner than expected. with the 32s it is crap on road gearing wise, and has reduction gears so nice off road.. clearance wise with the lift and tyres its great but imo not worth the hassel of changing cvs all the time.

They do look tuff with some chunky rubber on em!
I'm 99% sure i'm gettin it!
With this one won't be doin the run's will be more just rutted hills and stuff and camping and just gettin out there! I don't have the money to fix it after every trip...... On 32's still should do pretty good im thinkin?
Keep the advice comin!
And is that skid's vitara?

No, it's going to be geared like crap and break every time you go out, unless you spend a lot of money on the front end.
The front ends are easy to get big travel out of and hard to hold together. It can be done, but you've got to be patient and clever. An XL-7 or manual GV steel front end will help, but you'll still be dealing with CV strength and angles, and front auto locker will just make it worse. Mud won't break it, but technical driving will do it in.
The gearing is really hard to resolve. This car will already have 5.12 diffs, There are no readily available raitos lower than this. To gear 32's on road, you'd need 6.3:1 diff gears (!) A carby one has only 55Kw, and you'll be flogging the bejesus out of it to make it drive on road, especially when loaded. You can put a sierra transfer case in it but that's a lot of work, however you do it, and you'll have to deal with the rear diff offset.
In any case, the added power will be mostly absorbed by the added weight and dicky gearing
Yes, you can run crawlers in the transfer to fix the off road performance, and these work well, and you're likely to have power steering and some other nice stuff, but it's not an easy road, and I reckon within 12 months, you'll wish you hadn't bought it.
In short, there a reason it's got a new front diff and motor - the set up is going to be flogging them out.
Steve.
