I have just been looking at some pics of winch mounting, and see something interesting.

Left or Right.

Mine is mounted with the motor to the Drivers side. This means it pulls in on the BOTTOM of the drum - reducing the leverage on the winch when mounted feet down. It does angle the roper over the fairlead more however.

Others I have seen are mounted with the motor to the Passenger side - pulling in on the TOP of the drum. (Pics on LCOOL). This would put MUCH more force on the feet of the winch.

Thinking it over, I remember bullbars with differnet holes in the top for access.

I think you should really try to mount the fairlead as specified by warn etc. (vertically I mean). If it's too much higher or lower than specified the cable will have a lot of extra force on it especially with a hawse fairlead

Makes NO diff on front face mounted bars, only on L plate type, rope should pull on plate side.
