Theftproofing Lightforce

Post by derangedrover »

Anyone got any easy and neat ways to stop low life scum knocking off their LF lights? I need to protect a pair of HID's and a pair of 240's from being relocated.

Cheers

You could slip them inside old casings or use cheapie spotty covers to make them less attractive.

i think i farked up by posting on a link so this post may be somewhere else
anyway, if you want to theft proof driving lights, jaycar do a kit that hooks into most quality car alarms. when you disconnect the driving lights the alarm is triggered. not a bad solution!!

lock nuts are no good as you can turn the lamp to loosen the nut enough to undo it by hand or with locking pliers.

If you have enough thread left below the nut when it is tightened, cross drill the thread, then put a small hardened lock through the hole. Or, cross drill the nut and thread, and put a pin through both. It can be a split pin. Lets face it, anything you do will only slow down a determined thief. The cross drilled nut and thread is good for stopping nuts on towballs rattling loose.

weld a pipe around the mount so that it covers the nut and only sockets can be used and cant be taken off by hand or pliers.

look just remember that if a thief really wants it he will take it......just remember too that once you do something like thred the bolt or weld/tack the nut its gonna be a real bastard if you ever have to adjust or remove the lights

i have used and proven these "BARRA NUTS" and ive also been thru nearlly ever capital city bar a couple and spent a couple of days in each and the barra nuts did their job well prevented my IPF 900s from being flogged heaps of times   cheap and easy to install and easy to make em even more secure if you really want with out welding they have a dome head so they literally cant be undone with any kind of pliers etc ....only by the special key nut provided

I know a lot of the methods described will slow a thief down (which is our ultimate goal, as hopefully they will move on to an easier target), but does anyone fear the vindictive thief who can't get your lights so instead smashes them to teach you a lesson for being a smartar$e ?

I had Barra nuts a few years ago on my mag wheels. They're a good idea, but you need to make sure you've got the key tool spot on square to the lock nut- otherwise as soon as you apply pressure it will jump off the nut, rounding the edges on the round steel bits that mate with the nut and the holes in the nut itself. Then it becomes harder and harder to undo them.....

Personally I'm a big fan of 30,000 Volt capacitors in circumstances like this......
