GQ Gearbox Question
GQ Gearbox Question
In the last few months my gearbox has been a bit crunchy on changes, a few weeks ago I lost my gears for a minute on the shift pattern, then everything went back to normal. I put a TB42 motor and new clutch in 6 months ago, I had the oil changed in the gearbox 4 months ago, I rebled the clutch last weekend and thinking today maybe they had put 90w oil in instead of VMX80 I decided to change it again. There wasn't any metal on the magnet plugs, oil looked pretty black, not sure if it had been changed (I watched it being changed 2 years back) putting my pinky up the hole to have a feel around, I found something, and with a coat hanger & long nose pliers I extracted a slightly mangled roughly 80mm extenal circlip, anyone know where in particular it's from and if it's important?

It was put there for show..
Im thinking that you will be removing gearbox for rebuild soon, it wont be something you can ignore, things in gearbox need to be there!

Maybe I'd better put it back :-(

theres a large circlip that goes into the top of the box where the gearstick sits...maybe its that and the stick moved and didn't allow gearchanges.
worth a look

Thanks, that sounds like good news, I'll have a gander at a spare at a mates place then get a new one and have a go at fitting it through the floor hole, better news than changing the box, hopefully the lack of damage to the circlip indicates it's only been loose for a few weeks.
Maybe I also need to look into my clutch adjustment.

Looking at the manual pictures it appears to be a syncro spreader ring, there's one for each gear 1-4, still drives ok, 3rd gear seems to be the one that crunches more often, maybe it's that one.
