hey guys just wondering wat the pros and cons are of independent suspension for 4wd situation cheers

better handling on the black top.

more driveline stress from wheels leaving contact with the ground then comming back down hard - lockers can help reduce this issue.

pro - IFS absorbs bumps better = more comfy. IFS will also (usually) take the impact of a jump better, as the wheels can move independantly, so are less likely to bend on impact. most IFS has more clearance under the diff as the arms are /\ not __ like live axle.
disadvantages? severely limit axle travel, as it's the A arm length that dictates the limit of droop. diff height remains the same when one wheel climbs over a rock (IFS= wheel goes up into guard, rest of the front end stays level. live axle pushes the whole axle assembly higher.) IFS components are usually much weaker. more expensive to lift properly, as you need to do more than just replace the springs.

depends what sort of ifs your talking about.. the standard stuff that comes out on modern 4wds is not very good for offroad as it won't articulate like a live axle will but then there is the independant suspension that is used in offroad buggies, baja trucks etc.. that has the same amount of down travel as up travel

what kind of 4wd situation?
in a rock crawling situation a live axle set up will be best, if you want to drive the desert an ifs set up will probably be better
if you want to set up an extreme \ comp rig and intend to use it alot in that kind of situation then yeah, go the live axle, if you spend most of your time onroad, and want to take it for a trip on the beach or up a dirt track from time to time an ifs vehicle will probably be a better option
